Chain & Sprokets ?

Postby holdontight » Fri Sep 14, 2012 6:37 pm

My 09 ZX10 is due for a set of both (just clicked over20ks) and I have been toying with changing the rear from 41t to 43t. I have already changed the front from 17t to 16t and love the extra little bit of drive off turns but if a little bit is good more should be better yes. I know i'll loose about 25ks of my top speed but who realy ever rides at 300ks anyway. A speedo healer will fix that anyway.

So my questions are to peaple that have done the -1 +2 upgrade.
Is it ok to live with?
How buzzy is the engine at cruzing speeds?
How did it effect fuel range?

I will be changing both sprokets and chain together as the 16t front has done 15000ks anyway.
I love my new ZX10. It scares the shit out of me.

Will be sitting right at the point where it wants to go when on the freeway.
I've only done +3 on the rear. And it sucks at freeway speeds.

Was told that the -1 on the front is like a +3 on the rear thats why I did it :? . Its not in the "readt to go" zone but the +2 on top may put it there. May look at getting both rear sprokets. If its to much to live with  I can change it back.

Hey all re sprocket sizes...,

I did a lot of playing around with my sprockets. With my 08 ZX10 I started off with -1 on the front for the track (Phillip Island) which was good, but I ended up going -1 front and +1 rear as that was the suggested track combo from a few of the Aus Sbk riders I spoke to.. that worked fantastic... :D heaps of controlled acelleration and really it is quite a big jump from stock as you would already know without being too peaky... (and would work well on the street as well)

Now my confidence was pretty high at the time, I got a bit hungry for more acelleration, so I decided to try the -1 front and throw on the + 3 on the rear for Broadford one day.. (yes I went up another 2 teeth on the rear) and of course I could not keep the front wheel down, it was hard to handle, the whole thing was like riding an out of control bull.. always wanting to spin the rear up and of course I crashed due to spinning the rear up whilst leaned over and geting on the gas too soon whilst rounding pit corner. Got knocked out and broke my thumb, not to mention the other bruises and abraisions you get whilst rolling down the road like a rag doll !! :(

So the morale to my story is.. dont try to get too much acelleration.. it will stuff up the ride, and the handling of the bike, especially on the freeway.. it will suck the fuel (if you are worried about that) but the bike will become too peaky and is not fun to ride... you will let your guard down and bang, it will buck you off... just my thoughts... see the sequence of pics 1 to 4 for the finished product ..!! So stick with -1 front and +1 rear.. the best combination for sure..!!

I tried a -1 +2 on my 09 and found it rediculous to ride.. Ive been running -1 +1 for at least 18 months now and while still agressive, it wasnt as mental as the +2.. :kuda: And to answer your question about fuel, yes it will consume more, as it will be reving harder at all speeds then it used too..

For every day use, would selecting the next gear negate the extra fuel use?

I did the -1 +2 change on my '08 and the biggest benefit I found was a lot better acceleration low down. I use mine to do a lot of highway riding, and so far I haven't seen too much in the way of loss of fuel economy. Your best bet is to try different combos to get something you're comfortable with. You will need a Speedo healer though. When I did mine, the speedo ended up being 15% out.
