Advice!!! 636 out of action

Postby Bushy » Sun Dec 13, 2009 11:02 am

Hey guys

i rode my bike from beacon hill to chatsood(25 min ride) and was waiting for lights, when i noticed the temprature of my bike reach 115 then it started to flash... i immediately turned around and took it to a bike shop and asked for there advice as to why my bike would be overheating.
they said have you checked your coolants so i did and noticed my coolant reservoir was empty. so i got my tools out and pulled my bike apart to get the coolant and filled it up.
I thought to myself oh yep that was probably it so i continued my trip to blacktown going along the m2 i notice my temp continue to rise until it reached 119 then (HI) flashing, this was when i was going 100kms in sixth gear so no strain on the bike but was still overheating. I pulled over and noticed as soon as i stopeed the coolant fluid was spilling from my bike ( i think from the run off hosing) i let it sit for 20 mins thinking mayby it just needed to let the coolant go through the system. but no it continued to overheat. so i got a friend to pick my bike up and take it to team moto at blacktown. they are gonna look at it for me But what do you guys think it is?
the fan was working i checked that and it seemed like it was running fine except the temprature. When i first got off the bike and placed my hand on the reservoir it felt like the coolant was bubbling inside is that normal?

really wrecking my head any help is massively appreciated my bike is an 06 636 btw

Ok the second time sounds like she was over filled hence the run off fron the overflow hose.
It might be that your thermostat switch is not working......
The over flow bottle is not the bee all to end all ..... The first place to check is the radiator itself to see if that is full first.
Sounds like you have done the right thing getting it to the mechanics, let them sort it out.

Seeing as you didn't post that whilst filling the radiator it was pissing out everywhere - we'll assume there is no leak ;)
As Rob said it could be the thermostat OR it could be as simple as a faulty pressure cap on the rad, or a cracked overflow bottle ( if it can't keep pressure it'll boil at a lower temperature)
Worse case scenario is head gasket gone but I doubt it
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

When I am traveling with my ride or my bike, I always take a break for 10-15 minutes . When I am doing that my engine never overheated. I did not yet experience to overheat my bike because of my style.

Dude if yer bike is working OK you could ride from tank fill up to tank fill up ;) I wouldnt call that style, I would call that a waste of time unless the scenery was good

 ummmmm........like Rob said - you should never need to take a break to prevent overheating, if your cooling system is working correctly...... :?

Bushy - what about the spot where you park your bike each night ? Ever noticed any evidence of leaks etc in this spot ?? Sounds to me like you have a leak in the cooling system somewhere, and you have been running the bike with no coolant at all..... :? Hopefully it won't need a new head gasket......its a big job to replace one little part.......

he is trying to save it but there is every chance it needs replacing... how much would a bike radiator cost?
