im a big fan of braided lines...tho i dont do track days...

prob the cheapest and best mod to make would be braided lines and good fluid...

tho someone else was saying in another thread that they reckon the mastercylinder needs to be changed...suprised me to hear that....

We had a long discsussion on thia a few weeks back, unfortunately it was lost in our recent crash.
The problem is the master cylinder. Braided lines and dot 5 fluid work but you still have the lever on the bar after a few hard laps.
The choice seems to be a Brembo unit, but I believe the later model zx6r and zx14r master cyclinders also improve things.

Dave what exactly are the brakes doing?

I had problems with my brakes on my '06 10. I was never able to get a really firm lever, there was always a lot of free play. After putting on braided lines, changing pads, using numerous different fluids and then going to a ZX6 master cylinder the problem still existed but was slightly better. After doing some research I found the ZX14 calipers bolt straight on to the 10 (not sure about the 04/05 model), fair out what a difference that made, the braking capacity these calipers have is unbelievable, that and a very firm lever.

The only conclusion I can come to is the seals in the calipers were allowing the fluid to move through into spots it wasn't suppose to, another reason I suspected this was because when the air temp was cold the brakes were better (cold air resulting in harder seals).

Don't bother with the ZX14 master cylinder as it is them same as the ZX10, if you want to change the master cylinder and don't have the coin for a brembo one stick on the ZX6 m/c.

I hope that helps.

Yes the zx14 calipers fit the 04 / 05 zx10r & thats the best mod as all the guys from zx-10r.net recommend & advise you to do ;)

wow.... so KHI build a kick-arse, go fast 180hp race orientated bike..then stick shitty calipers on it?

DAMN

the ol cbr929 (2000) had the most kick arse 4 pot nissin's on it..use to pull up SUPER well...

in fact...looking at the 06 zed..im pretty sure the new nissin (changed from tokico??) 4 pot's they have on my 06 are the same as the old blade... they look very similar (was comparing them to a 954 blade the other nite)

mind u..braided lines on my stock zed, and the brakes are firm as!!..mind u, havent done any track days yet...

COME IN WATTIE- how'd u find the zed brakes at the track?

what m/c does the zed use?? (zx6r?? zx10r?? old zx9r??) ...might be an option if its up to standard??

You dont need to change the calipers, you just need to setup what you have to make it perform better.

I have tried telling people on the ZX10R.net site this but some would rather make the bike better than learning to setup stuff and ride better.

Put braided lines, good fluid and most importantly put a good aftermarket master cylinder on it and the brakes will work better than your capable of using them.

For proof of this just look at the ASC riders, rules state they most use stock calipers and they can lap within a few seconds of the WSBK guys at phillip island with there extra HP, trick Ohlins suspension and monobloc Brembos. And most of that time difference is from the suspension and HP.

If he has the same problem I did then the only way of fixing it will be new calipers.

Neka, the ZX10 and ZX6 have Tokico calipers, and the ZX14 has Nissin.

was just poking around Boltons kwaka here in SA while the mrs was next door shoe shopping...noticed the gtr,zx14r etc have nissin's... im pretty sure the 07 6/10 also have nissin now...tho i didnt pay that much attn...

he also made mention of news that a zx8r *may* be on the cards.... and the zx10 for 08 will be different- but apparently KMA arent telling the Rep's too much as they dont want secrets out....

What was your problem?

If you have done the additions i said and still had a problem then you may have had a problem with the pistons in the calipers. This can be fixed as well a lot cheaper than getting new calipers. This problem has been few a far between though.

Again, you dont need to change the calipers they work fine once setup.

thanks for your replies, the problem is that after two or three hard laps the lever is on the bar ,as mentioned by someone earlier.they cool down between sessions, but it happens again next time out. i still have feel in the lever and obviously can pull up, but i have to cut the session short before i bin it. i will start with an after market m/c and go from there, any other help much appreciated, thanks.

When you go for an aftermarket MC go for the one with the biggest piston size and leverage available like the Brembo 19x20. The forged unit is all you need but you can go for the billet one. Or you could try the Brembo billet limited race unit like the MotoGP boys but that cost about $2900.

i know a few people that have this problem on their 05 zx10r. my friend got a 05 zx6r master cyclinder and it solved the problem but if you want to go even 1 more better, also get braided lines and good pads. Hope that helps
