Hey,

It looks like my fuel tank cap doesn't seal to well, i left it on the trailer in driving rain for 3 days, after a track day.

Which you wouldn't think would be a big deal.

It was when my bike wouldn't start anymore... it kind of just died.


Pulled off the tank and drained about 1/2L of water out of the tank.
Pulled the spark plugs and found them to be full of water too.

I don't know what water does for the injection system? But I doubt it likes it.

I have purged the tank and ran about 5L of fuel through it, it's still coming out a bit milky through the fuel pump... but at least it's fuel now.

I put it all back together and still no dice. It just turns and doesn't start at all. I'd say the fuel isn't getting through the EIF system or it still has water in it.

So how do I purge the EFI system?

Obviously I am trying to save some coin on a mechanic if I can avoid it.

Id keep doing it till its clean and only petrol comes out.

I have had it suggested that I could try running a little metho through the injection system with some fuel as metho is water soluble. Apparently the injectors get clogged or blocked by water.

Only question is will metho damage any gaskets in the injection system?

Once I get it running I will run some EFI cleaner though the system. It's just getting it running :/

Definately put in 500ml of metho. Injectors dont like water, but it doesnt sound like the problem. Is the bike trying to fire at all, or just winding over ?

The plugs are definitely firing, I tested one with it out.

It sounds like it is just winding.. but maybe if there is water blocking the injectors, the fuel is just sitting backed up behind it so it's not getting into the cyclinders and even giving it a chance to fire. Well hopefully anyhow.

I'm going to try some metho tonight.... unless someone says... "OMG DONT PUT METHO THOUGH IT YOU WILL DO THIS REALLY BAD THING etc. etc....."

Aerostart !!!!! Get some of that, pull the top off the airbox, remove the aircleaner and try starting it while spraying that down the guts. Sometimes thats all it takes. Have been done over more than once when things have got wet and wont go again. A dose of start ya bastard or aerostart got it going everytime

I'd put the metho through first with the plugs removed and when your happy that its cleared do the start ya bastard as suggested .

hmmmm....... :? well, you probably won't do that again eh ??

Take out *all* the plugs and crank over the motor for 15-20 seconds to ensure that there is no water left in the combustion chambers, then go with aerostart, its great. I would bet my house that you still have water throughout the EFI, injectors, injector rails, fuel pump etc.....

You should also do an oil change as well, if there is water inside the motor, some of it will have made its way into the sump as well......

No matter how stuffed you are after a track day................Take the scooter off the trailer, and put it to bed..........

Yeah i'm a naughty boy I should have taken my baby off the trailer.

FIXED IT@#

Hi five DAD!

Dad came around and we went a step further.
-Removed the throttle bodies / injectors.
-Rinsed out the lines as best we could with metho... and I mean turning it upside down shaking it for ages. Also we turned the bike over more to hopefully get rid or more water.
-There was water sloshing up past the valves when the pistons where @ the top of the cylinder.
-So we turned it over a bit more hoping it would run out the exhaust valves.
-Next we shot some start ya bastard straight into engine on top of the valves... just to hear a plug fire. They did a few crackles for us so. IT COULD START!
- Put the throttle body back on attached the fuel tank which we had already purged.
- Sprayed start you bastard into the top of the throttle bodies to start it and until it sounds like it was idling on it's own.
- Then just left it idling until it got pretty hot to hopefully get rid of the rest of the water.

Now it's starting like normal... and I can't wait to go for a SPIN!

yea i remember my dad sticking metho in my tank when i had a water prob.. it was a 2 stroke tho, so didnt need to replace the oil...

some handy tips there mate...

id be looking at a new fuel cap too..if its a race bike, u can get sum cool keyless caps that look the goods!!

It's not a race bike.. I just have glass for it.

I changed the oil and filter for full synth. If there is a little water in it I imagine it will boil out when the bike gets hot :(

Sounds like you have sorted it out - I don't think that you will have any more problems with water inside the motor - easy way to check is keep an eye on the oil-level window - if it gets 'cloudy' in colour, take off your oil filler cap and check underneath it........if there is still water mixed in with the oil, you will have a milky film on the underside of the filler cap.

Change the oil again to fix this - but hopefully the first change you have just done will sort out the problem for good.

hmm im sure i read/heard sumwhere that this can damage the motor?? if water boils, it may change the boiling temp of the oil?? or the moisture may seep into places u dont want moisture??
