Was perusing the Owners manual and was looking at the periodic maintenance chart.

Interestingly enough and which may come as a shock to some it states the the oil and filter should be changed every twelve thousand kilometers.

Yes beleive it or not, I have checked it 3 times and thats what it states.

However will not be following this regime but thought y'all should know.

It surely has to be a typo!!

My ZZR600 service schedule says oil change every 6000km's and a filter every 12000 - If you're using good enough oil I guess it's possible for it to last 12000km's....

oil these days is better than it use to be. in a car they reccomend 10,000km changes.most bikes its 5-6000km.
i think my honda states oil every 6thou, filter every 12 thou....i never make it to 6thou, so i just change it every time i crash.
seriously it would prob last 12k km, but i find it overkill doin it at 3k...jamie does his at 6k and hes so far got 60,000km out of his bike (its now 2 yrs old)..so he does a few km...

The Golf is once a year, or every 15000...got a lot to do with new slippery metals and better fabrication techniques, as well as the quality of oils in use etc.

Mercs do 40000 or 2 years apparently...

I can't imagine a typo like that being allowed to remain un-recalled - they'd be liable for a lot of engine rebuilds...

I've always been told by those "in the know" that oil starts to lose its composition and go acidic after 6 months of absorbing engine by-products. :?: I change my filter every oil change. I know its pretty much unnecessary but I think its a small investment compared to a grenaded engine. new_blowingup.gif

Not a typo, the trend is going towards longer service intervals for all new vehicles. Manufacturers can claim lower servicing costs....

Most mineral oils will only last 3k to 5k before the oil molecules start to shear and break down, longer with synthetics.

A bike is much harsher on oil than a car because the gearbox and clutch are lubricated by the same oil as the engine....

Anyways, it's all academic in the end...... change your oil each 2500km and your engine will last forever, change it each 10,000 and it'll probably last a bit less than forever...... I always recommend the aircraft owners change their oil each 25hrs, proven to help the engine last a lot longer.....

If you want have an oil analysis done, you'll know the condition of the oil as well as the engine, that'll give you an excellent idea of when to change it. One company is Wear Check in Bris 32437203, good service

i think that should actually say "Slops" as in brett's mum...
kawasaki have even heard abt her??
maybe theyve been reading this forum too much....

theres a difference between a mistake of putting an "O" where an "A" should be, and putting a "12000" where a "3000" should go...

bloody hell...do u see wot ive gotta put up with here? im dealing with bloody clowns..they got the big floppy shoes & all!!...

Ah Neka no wonder you haven't sent a hooroo to 'Me Mum" Obviously YOU knew her in the late 70s when she was earning crusts doing her "Rosie McDonald" Impersonations. Red Fuzzy wig, big floopy shoes, red nose n a leopard skin G. Went over huge with the McDonalds Restaurants Kids Party Days. Specially with the older boys. Btw How'd the Junior Burger go ?. I'll pass on your best.

I have a tendancy towards doing the oil every 3000 especially if there is a bit of track use and a filter every second one but i do it myself and if you can get the oil cheap at a feul depot or somewhere like that its ok but if you have to pay 50 bucks a go i would leave it a bit longer.

12000 kms it must come out looking like muck i prefere newish out and new in than gunk out and the new stuff is changing colour after 15 minutes running then when you get up it at least you know you have a sump full of good oil.Of course the new synthetics may last a good bit longer. :D :D :D :D
