zx9r rear spring

Postby Barrabob » Wed Oct 25, 2006 8:42 pm

anybody know what rate spring is used in the rear of a zx9r 2002 model i believe.

Ponty is thinking of going a softer one and as we know he is 50kg wringing wet and i have a fair few diferent rate ones but need to know what the stock 9r one is before trying some out.

racetechs guide didnt help any with imformation on the rear.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

Ponti knowing how soft the rear springs in 9R's are already, it concerns me that you want an even softer spring? What damping settings are you running? Have you tried backing off the compression? Maybe you've done all the other fiddles?? I dunno?? Just making sure is all? Even at 50kgs ringing wet, A standard rear 9 spring is pretty soft???

I am actually thinking of fitting a stiffer spring to mine. I only weigh about 73kgs at the moment, so I am no heavyweight either. I have cranked up the rebound and compression more than it should be to compensate. So that's why I struggle to understand the need for an even softer spring?

Won't you end up having to have too much compression and rebound to control the weight taking over the spring. ??????? :?

This may be an answer, I stole the pic off a privateer website where they obligingly had a Penske catalog listed.

It looks like the stock spring rate is 7x500. It also gives optional rates for heavy and light riders.

Hope this helps 8).

Late Edit> Save anyone else looking, all the common Japanese manufacturers are listed: http://www.teamprivateer.com/26-Penske.pdf

Thanks ratmick i can work with that, jst need to work out the stock rate so we know if where doing the right thing.

Its no good going to the trouble of pulling outthe old one if the new one will have issues.

Looking at that guide it says stock spring 455 and optimal for a lightweight 455 so probably look elsewhere.

Strika,

Maybe the E has a softer spring? *EDIT* doesn't look like it from mick's post.

The OEM spring on my 02 handles my 85 kg with ease. When fully wound in, I have exactly 15 mm of sag (0mm unladen bike sag  ), which is way too hard. It's now about 2/3 wound out (towards the softer end), and it's still slightly tight. Compression is set to the soft side and rebound about the middle of the adjustment.

Yeah Marty I've twiidled heaps & while I'm not desperate to replace the spring if I can get a Cheapie off Barrabob that will improve me scoot it's worth a scratch around looking.
Thanks Ratmick btw :D
