Hi,

New here.. am looking for a ZXR250.

Just want some help from existing ZXR250 (aka ZX2R) owners...

1. The ZXR250 with 2 round headlight in different housing, when do they actually stop and replaced by the one with 2 headlights with in a single housing?

2. I reckon they are way over price. the cheapest in the market now are like $4500 for a 1990 model private sale.. which according to the redbook is probably worth $3500 top.. Is that always the case with these bike?

3. Do they actually have local made ZXR250 back in 1996 or something? There are also a few 2000 model (2003 compliance) around, but some claim they are not grey import.. I am confused.

4. Can a Ventura rack be installed onto this little ninja? If so, anyone has the part no?

Why be interested in em if they over priced. Look for a bike thats

1. the a model is the one with twin headlights, they changed to the c model with single headlight in either 90 or 91
2. red book is always off. it goes on a national average. soe states are cheaper than others. and it goes by what stamp duty you pay, ie, the figure you put down as the sale price on the transfer docs. why would you put the actual price down, when you can get away with putting a cheaper price down and pay less stamp duty.
3. zxr250 are ALL grey imports. none were imported here through dealers. from experience i can tell you this is a pain in the arse. a plastic side fairing will cost you upwards of $300 second hand. you can't get them new, period. parts are hard to find.
4.yes you can put a ventura rack on them, tho i couldn't point you in the right direction, sorry.

a few other things to note. they are over-priced for a couple of reasons. 1. they are a true sports 250 like the cbr250rr, and everyone wants one cos they look hot(for a 2fiddy). there are limited numbers cos they're imports. they handle incredibly well and are the highest powered four stroke 250 on the market. but the advantages over a zzr250 are mainly cosmetic. they look heaps better, but don't really ride that much better. i had a zxr250 for my learner, and loved it. but found the zzr to be able to do everything a zxr could, but at a cheaper price.
IMO go for a zzr 250. more bang for buck and save your $$$$ for your next bike. you'll regret it if you buy a zxr without having ridden a zzr.

I had a look at some of the ZZR250.. they are even more expensive than the ZXR250 for some reasons.. That's why I gave up... I haven't ridden one before...

The reason why I only consider ZXR is because... (this may sound stupid).. I am not preparing to upgrade to larger CCs in the next 2 - 3 years.. and if I have to spend some big dollars for something that I have to live in in the next couple of years.. I would rather get something I like.. (e.g. Same with the wife.. )

well a few things to look for then.

dont bother with the A model, there's no point, you can get a good C model for around the $4500 mark if you look around.
check the steering stops, they're fairly week on the zxr250s and generally the first thing to break in a crash. also if they are broken, then the bike shouldn't be on the road as it's had a fairly nasty stack resulting in damage to the frame.

Kms won't be too much of an issues as i've seen em still running well after 200,000km and the clock will have been wound back when it was imported and complianced.

Don't let any fool tell you it's not a grey import, to the best of my knowledge and everyone here, every single zxr250 has been imported privately.

get one with a good amount of rubber left, you don't wanna have to replace tyres straight up, it's just an extra cost you can avoid.

make sure you get the key for the rear compartment too, it's a bitch trying to get one cut. kawasaki have to send one out from japan to be cut.

make sure there isn't too much slack in the clutch and brake cables and that they move fluently. the suspension is pretty soft on these, they were built for a 60kg jap bloke. but they are fully adjustable which is why i went for one of these in the first place.

make sure that when you go to look at one (this relates more to private sale) that the engine is cold when you go to start it up. it should take a fair amount of choke to get it warmed up. if the revs go straight up when you start it with the choke on, then it's been started recently. ask the bloke for a cup of coffe while you wait for it to cool down if there are any issues with the engine, it'll show up when it's cold. i.e. you might find a severe flat spot around 6,000 RPM when it's cold, but it might disappear when it's hot.

well.....i purcahsed mine off ebay for $2k wihout roadworthy and stuff, and had it registered all up i spent $3.5k

i reckon it was a good deal and i sold it for $2.5, well....they are not the cheapest and performance wise they are great, but might be a little bit more expenisve than some of the not grey imported ones when it comes to parts.

if i had to choose again, i'd probably go naked, like the VTR 250 or some sort as they are better in handling, and parts and stuff available everywhere in australia

for $4.5 u can get a nearly new naked bike these days

here's my 2cents

mate $4500 will get u a zx2r....shit u can almost get a brand new GPX for abt $6k on road if u look hard..
as Diesel says, zx2r are a grey import (only 250 sports bike that was Aus delivered was the cbr250 in abt 98 or so, only fora few yrs too)...

parts , servicing etc would be cheaper on a gpx/zzr ...ride comfort would prob be better too...but the zx2r def looks better.

kawasaki australia did import them recently. so parts are alot easier to get now. They didn't sell many because the price. I think they were going for about $10500.

Holly shi! $10500 is a bit steep for a buzz box new or not!
My old CBRR 250 race bike cost $3000 with all road gear & race gear
complete & running sweet!
