hey guys, my '03 636 is really rough changing between 1st and 2nd, no matter how smooth my input is (other people - much more experienced riders than myself- have made the same comment) Only has 23000km's on the clock, not sure if it's something I can adjust or fix, or if not, how can I prevent it getting worse? cheers kids -J.

How's the clutch slack?

Isn't there something to do with the positive neuter finder that does something to affect 1-2 changes? Can never get a really nice 1-2 on the ER, either, but other gears all fine. My Suzi has no problems in this regard, but it doesn't have the PNF...obviously :?:

Might be a bit of a bone Question, but when was the last oil change?

I will go with the oil change and also maybe it need a little clutch adjustment, I am in the middle of putting mine back together as a roadie a week before a trackday  and am about to thrust it into service as a bike courier vehicle the pictures will come later.

you can get a mod for the gearbox its a spring and star thingy that makes them change better or so the manufacturer says and it isnt cheap either.

I havnt had any problems with my gearbox but have been pretty pedantic about using the clutch and keeping it smooth even at the track because for the time being i am more interested in keeping bike in good order than making up 3hundreths of a second per lap.

I might do this when i have some spare cash.

any suggestion?

most bikes are clunkier from 1-2nd neway...fresh oil can help, as can holding in the clutch a little longer, but mostly get use to it...

The shift star is a Factory Pro item & it available from Wolf Racing in Brisbane.

Mate & I put a new clutch in my 03 636 on Wednesday & had a quick look at it to see whats involved in changing it & mate said it will be easy, so all going right I should have it done sometime this year...

I emailed Wolf awhile ago about it..

Hi Michael,

$300 for that  theiving bastages

First to second is usually clunky, oil/clutch adjustment and chain tension all play a part. I always find gear changes get rougher towards the service interval (old oil)and occasional missed gear when chain is loose.

Sometimes it's just about getting the revs right. A change at 3500rpm may be a bit harsh, but at 4000 it's better. Try playing with that and see it you can find a sweet spot :?:

Yeh it is a bit expencive but its best to try to do something before your gearbox shits itself than later when its been flogged to death.

Would think wolf racing would import one the same way i would and probably get one of those ignition advancers as well to save on postage. :D

Might be a expencive sevice coming up for the courier vehicle.

If it makes my bike gear shift sweet, it's worth it...

J-

That's the constant troubles I had with my 636 - gave me the royal sh*ts in the end, after 4 times in the shop, so I got rid of it - as you know ...

don't forget ur goin through neutral to get to second. i find the same thing happens on the 9, but i find a quick hard flick usually causes me less drama than trying to be gentle with it.

Thanks for the input troopers, I'll mention this all to my mechanic on friday and see what he can do about it first, after that I'll go all gung-ho on the mother, see if I can't get it smoother again... -J.

been having a chat with a few people around the place and they all say fit the detent kit but not the star, I havent ridden my bike as a roadie in six months so i had forgotten about it but yeh it false neutrals a lot between first and second in stop start trafic.

I have a detent kit lined up for the next service or should i just bug the shit out of midclowns who are going to try to fob me off anyway.

mine is still under warranty. :D
