The upgrade, ZX6R or 7R?

Indeed. The thing with them is that they seem to just age a lot more quickly on the ouside than the inside; paint dulls and wires start flapping in the breeze a lot sooner than their engines start getting rattly and so forth.

For the months of assin' about involved I think I'll just bite the bullet and buy a non-frankenstein bike for the $6K+ required.

Well, if you're looking at an F-model, don't budget that high. If the bike you're looking at has, like, a full system and a race shock, and is absolutely immaculate, you'd pay just north of five grand for it.

Six grand is getting into G-model territory.

Hell, my J2, a 2001 model, which is getting on a bit in km's (~46,500) and carries a few very minor blemishes from a low-speed stack, I'd happily part with for just over seven grand.

Finally, do me a favour... could you ask your uncle what he plans to do with that bike of his and let me know? My ZX9 is now finished, which means I no longer have a project in progress in the garage, which means I'm going to start going cuckoo soon if I don't get another.

Mate its a fair way off ................. so Go test riding, I agree with IK & think the 6 would be an easier bike to get comfy on. As for performance: heavy solid front ends verses light nimble front end same same. A early six can do mighty thinks in the right hands as can a 7.

hmm 6 is lighter, more comfy for longer rides, and EASIER to wheelie....
7 is known for its superb handling....i kno u CAN wheelie a 7, tho with the extra weight on the front the 6 is easier....have fun trying the bikes...and as theyve said, find the 1 that suit u best...or buy both !!

Test ride them both like others have said and a lot will depend on you(height/weight) cause i find the 7 better for taller riders due to the more stretched out position. Don't buy into the paper stats cause you will hear the common stuff like overweight/underpowered but once your on the gas all that is forgotten. Still one of the best looking/value for $$ bikes going around IMHO but i am biased :D ........7r. Look i say 7 but the next goes say 6 so when you ride them both you will know what best suits you. Either way you can't lose cause you will be on a kawasaki.

Mmmm, a few more things to consider..I'm about 6 foot tall, so perhaps a larger bike might be more comfy? I guess it still comes down to the ol' tyre kick session.

I-K: as for my uncle's bike I can always ask if he's prepared to part with it, I assume you can arrange for it to be transported from Melbourne?

just do alot of research & dont buy the first thing u decide on, whether it b a 6 or 7....i have a f model 6r which i am more than happy with, but i looked 4 about 4mths 4 mine, as for 5 grand for this model....that depends where u are. when i was looking for mine at the beginning of last year, private sellers in sth east qld were asking $6500- $7500 for a f model with 50000k's+ on the clock....bike shops wanted even more. i ended up finding mine on the net in sydney.......$300 for a return flight, & $200 to get it couriered door to door fully insured. it only had 31000k's on it, & with the extras i got with it i reckon i saved myself around $2000. it goes pretty hard 4 an old girl to, as a few of the other qld crew would vouch for. just keep looking & dont impulse buy, & dont rule out interstate, flights are cheap these days. i landed in sydney at 8am & was flying back to brissy atlunch time that day the proud owner of a kwaka.......good luck & good hunting

Actually I have found my $6Kish price might be a little high - it's what I'vbe been seeing on bikesales which often seems to attract people wanting high prices for some reason, but trading post prices on the other hand seem to be the the mid $5K range, go figure. Either way with some haggling I could get the price a bit more honest.

I also noticed that for less popular paint jobs prices can be lower..What's a rough estimate for resprays, all fairings and rims in one colour?

About $2500... $1000 for the spraypainting and $1500 for the drop in resale value which a custom paintjob entails, because it will make everyone think you've launched the bike and a uniform paintjob is all the repair you could afford.

If you want a unique-looking bike, it's more cost-effective to buy some hammered fairings and a tank from a wrecker and spray those.
