ZX10r - DLC forkleg coating (warranty issue)

Postby Afrodesia » Tue Apr 04, 2006 12:34 am

Hey folks

I can post pics due to dead camera, but has anyone heard of the black fork slider coating (DLC) coming off on the zx10r's? Folks i have spoken with have mentioned that some of the Suzooks had problems with the black coating scuffing and wearing off - but this was up at the slider end where friction played a role. My right fork is perfect, the left has the black crap dissapearing off the lowest inch of the fork slider area - not even in an area that sees slider travel. Currently waiting to hear back about this as a warranty claim, am jsut curious if anyone else has ever heard or seen it?

Fresh batteries and I will try and get some pics up to show it..

thnx in advance :p

I saw a gixxer thou out on a ride yesterday which had the same problem, but never spoke to the owner. Something like a coating may not be warrantable as they may consider it fair wear and tear. Not 100% sure on that one but good luck. :)

Ok, sorry this took so long.

As you can see from the pic, the fault is below any area where friction could be the cause - last 25mm of the slider basically. U can see the rings above where travel has been stopping. It is like this all the way around the left leg (worse on the inside), yet the right leg is still perfect - so cleaning products cannot be blamed.

Bike only has 9000k on it.

Yes indeed  I had an 82 650 Katana (the Claytons one) with the black chrome zorst. The shit just pretty well peeled off although it was only a nanosecond before the arse of the thing rusted out. As I remember the night before my wedding (1984)I was in the garage fitting a shiny new chrome Tranzac replacement system. 8) so the original lasted less than 2 years.

good news :)

Kawasaki Australia has approved the replacement of the lower fork leg - i got the expected "corrosion from cleaning products" question, but thankfully it is the left leg only. 3 week wait for part. Yay :)

Always good to hear about Kawasaki Warranty claims going through. Thats something for the used bike buyers to keep an eye out for.

Midtown - spent a lot of coin there over the years so they try to look after us... Was lookin on a post on the zx10r forums and it seems only 1 other guy had a problem (knew of a problem) with the fork leg finish going, so I imagine its an extremely rare thing to happen.

Still.... had to wait over 2 weeks for an answer back about it, me thinks its time to get a lot more familiar with my service manual and do my own maintenance etc.. just in case theres any other small problem lurking that shop apprentices would never notice.

The only concern I have about this warranty claim is that I need to make absulutely fgn sure that the forks are balanced with fresh - equal oil etc after the lower is replaced on the left hand side. Can only imagine what would happen to handling if the left leg alone was done and levels / settings were messed up... /sigh

laters!

re Front Stand..

Absolutely!! Watching that thread for news on the front stand :) Also talked a mate into splitting the cost of some new tools with me. If anyone is gonna screw with my toy it better be me.. hehe Will update about the warranty work done after its complete.... Tis kinda silly to be bothered about the fork job, but its so much more complex than just tossig my old wheel...
