zxr750 & zx7r had a slipper clutch ?

Hi all,

Just reading July Performance Bikes review on the new zx6rr and in a sidebar story they reckon that the zxr750 & zx7r from 1989 up to 2003 had a slipper clutch which apparently was adjusted to have so little affect that you couldn't notice, this was the forerunner to the current item in the zx6rr & zx10r.

1989 seems a long time ago for a production bike to have something still considered fairly exotic.

sounds like there not a member of KSRC, otherwise it would be "my dad was drunk WITH ur dad..and then out rode him"...lol...at leats its an analagy we can all understand here in ksrc??

could be although it came across as the opinion of the magazine rather than marketing info from kawasaki (this doesn't make it true of course). They actually referred to it as a "back torque limiter".

It goes on to say that the race manual, whatever that is, shows how to set it up for "race conditions", any zx7r owners have any info or know one way or the other ?

i think you'll find that it was not the "street version" of these bikes but the limited edition used for racing, ie the zxr750r and zx7rr.

these bikes came with flatslides, close ratio gearbox's etc oh and the sexy single seat.....

BTW how farkin good does thet 93-94, green red and white one look, thats my favorite paint job on one of my favorite all time bikes.

Thanks Phil, good info. Now that you've said it it makes sense it would only be the homologation models for racing.

I was always partial to the zxr750 but never had one, the blue/green/white striped one and the black one with blue/pink were great colour schemes (imho).

i've got a 97 ZX7R and if i knew what a slipper clutch was i'll let you know if i had one

Actually they all have slipper-clutches as standard ... all models from 1989 right through to the current ZX7R, not just the R/RR race versions.

This site is a gold-mine of info, some of which is useful for other Kwaka's too. I only found it recently but is so good it almost makes me want to get a ZX7

Perhaps I read the article wrong or am missing the point, but what did Kawasaki actually fit to make it a slipper clutch? Didnt the bloke just install some thinner steel plates and racing springs to 'activate' the slipper clutch? If so, cant this be done to any clutch? or is there some mechanism on the ZX7, ZX6 & ZX10 clutch that I dont have on mine?

From a quick reading of the article at the bottom of the page, they are different, if you just used thinner plates it would slip in both directions, under heavy load from the engine or through the wheel, if you fitted the stiffer race springs, you'd just be back to where you were with the original plates.... I think.
