2001 ZX9 engine in a 1998 chassis??

Wed Mar 22, 2006 11:48 am

Hi guys. My 98 C model is approaching 55,000ks and i'm just a little bit worried about the gearbox now that the kays are getting up there. Theres no missed shifts or anything like that yet, but i love the bike and wanna keep it for ages.

So I've bought a 2001 engine with 20,000ks on it complete with loom and carbs, and i bought a std exhaust off ebay last week.

Now my question is, does anyone know if the engine will bolt in?? I know the electrics are different, but i have the loom so that shouldn't be a problem. I also have the exhaust and the carbs, so no probs there. But I'm wondering about the engine mounts etc? The 01 rear engine mount is rubber mounted according to an old AMCN rag. Does this mean the new engine wont bolt up?????

If anyone knows anything about this conv, any input will be much appreciated.

Cheers

The E-model runs a longer ouput shaft, so you'll likely need to space out the rear sprocket... have a read of Mick C's gearbox swap article linked from the front page.

There *might* be a difference in the top mounting bolts, but, since you have the electrics and the carbs, it should be a straight swap apart from that.

If you haven't figured out what you're doing with your existing engine, carbs and electrics, I could probably help you decide... ;)

thanx for the feedback guys! Unfortunately Mick C didnt mentoin his solution to the spacing out of the rear sprocket to align it with the new longer front sprocket shaft. I guess some type of fabricated spacers should do the trick.

not sure what i'm doing with my 9c engine yet. but if i decide to sell it, i'll post it up here first ok.

Didn't I? I ended up using the original C model countershaft to get the alignment right and just moved all the newer E model gears across to it. Obviously not what you would be wanting to do with the whole engine to put in

my bad, of course you did. i just didnt put two and two together. you didnt need to space the rear sprocket cos the front one ended up being in the original position.

yeah, unfortunately i think i'm goping to have to come up with something different. it'd be a big job putting the C output shaft in the E. especially when my C engine and gearbox hauls ass and still changes perfectly. maybe an E or F model rear rim is the solution?

i cant believe how tiny, as in thin, the standard headers are. downright embarrasing!

Hi, I've decided to sell my nine and hadn't got around to doing this conversion so if anyone is keen on a 2000-2001 engine with 20,000ks on it, I'll put an ad in the parts for sale section.
