ZXR250 Condition

Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:55 am

What do you guys think about this bike.
http://www.bikesales.com.au/as/search/s ... age=1&x=37

I am a bit touchy that it is a 1993 model. (but then Sumoto sells them).

The one thing that I am not sure about is the 30K.

Has anyone got experience with ZXR's at around 30K, are they alright or not ?

30,000km is not unusual for a bike that old, remember that lots of people only ride on weekends. And given that it's a grey import, it may have sat idle for a long time around the time that it moved to Australia.

I'd be interested to know when it got its Australian compliance plate (eg 1 year ago, 5 years ago), and does it have a service history from that date onwards.

30,000km is probably getting towards middle age for a bike that AFAIK sits at over 9,000rpm at 100km/h. The real issue is whether it was properly looked after - if the oil was always changed regularly and the bike hasn't been thrashed, I'm sure it'll be fine. But with grey imports, you often know nothing of the bike's early life.

You'd probably still be a lot safer spending your $5K on a factory delivered (ie non grey import) GPX250 or ZZR250. It would get you a much newer bike, and quite likely one with lower kms. I guess it's just a question of whether you are dead keen on the ZXR/ZX2R (hey, it's a nice looking bike and it's very fast for a 4 stroke 250), or whether you are happy with any 250 so long as it's good and solid and reliable.

When I posted about the ZX2R vs ZZR250, one of the guys who owned the exact same model you're looking at here said that if he had his time over again, he'd have bought a ZZR250 for a first bike.

I dont agree John H... if the bike has been in the country for 6 years, and it has been looked after, I dont think a non grey import would be a better deal... It sounds like the guy has receipts for all the work done, still has all the origional parts etc...

Also you can probably talk the guy down 500 if you dont want the gear...

At the end of the day there is no such thing as a sure thing.... A brand new bike can have trouble after a year where a 30 year old bike can keep riding with almost no maintenance....

I have owned 2 grey imports in my life and have never had trouble with them... Once a bike is out of warranty there is no difference between them... what matters is how well it has been looked after...

For sure, I'm not trying to bag grey imports and I think there's never a 100% safe answer with these things. There's always a risk factor (you can buy brand new and still get a lemon too!)

I guess I was making the point that whereas this guy is looking at $5000 for a 1993 bike with 30,000km (and from the ad I got the impression that the gear is a separate sale at $1200 extra) you could get other 250s with much lower kms and much newer for similar money, if age/mileage is a worry.

Eg: I got my 2001 ZZR250 back in 2003 with just 732km on the clock and full service history (all 2 of 'em!) for $6,250 and it still had a few months of the factory warranty left. And a brand new (if shitty) helmet was thrown in to the deal.

I think I was just trying to say - if you're dead set on a ZXR then this bike is probably fine but you'd probably want to see what service history it's got. If you're worried about age or mileage and not dead set on having a ZXR, take a look at what other bikes you can also get for similar money.

A bit green? That's Kawasaki green!

You're going to upset a lot of people on this board with that attitude!

dude that's been stacked harder than mine!

but 30K is nothing if it's been serviced right.
they got a tiny short stroke so lower piston speeds for the revs they do compared with a zzr250 which is a twin and i've seen a zzr250 in great condition after 200,00 kms!

i own one that's the A model, it's been really great and smooth, on when i bought i had 32k on the clock, didn't worry me as i wasn't planning to keep it long and i bought it for $2k and another 1k on top to have it road worthy and registered

and now the bike is nearly 35k

$5k to me is abit over the top with the price

the bike itself is pretty good and reliable if u look after it.

try ebay, and check them out personally before u bid on them

also on the panel, there's no sticker or so, looks like it's been replaced and re-painted, it might indicate that it had past problems may be worth checking it out.

I suppose its not that bad. Just against the grass and everthing. I supose if it had black wheels or something to soften it down, its just it is very bright.

Thommo,
a brand new GPX250 on road only cost me $6,700, was my first bike last year, now i'm on a zzr600. Purchase a near new GPX250 and then you will have a great sell or trade for your second bike. In fact in Vic you can get one here http://www.bikesales.com.au/as/search/sd.do?recIndex=10&makeID=42&modelID=875&page=0&y=15&selectedModelIndex=8&selectedMakeIndex=38&previousResultPerPage=20&currentPage=1&x=35 for $6000

In spite of everything I've said that can be construed as "don't buy a ZXR250", I must say that diesel's ZX2R is so purdy, I want it! (And I've already got a 250. And I'm supposed to be saving for a 600!)

Tommo - having helped a mate clean chain-oil gunk and road grime off his bright red wheels last weekend, there's a lot to be said for black or grey coloured wheels and their dirt-hiding ability!
