Does the emission gear linked up to the carbs serve any purpose other than to clutter up the space above the motor? + can this be removed & left off permanently for racing only?

Good question Rob, and while you guys are at at it, what about the later z
zx7r's.
I know it makes a big improvement to the U.S. models, but no idea about Aust delivery ones.
Any body know?

If this the same emission crap that plugs into the engine at another point (crankcase, head, wherever), then its serving the function of picking up the extra pumped air pressure and associated vapourised oil in the motor and feeding it back into the carbies to be burnt up. I'd say it's not worthwhile taking it off as you would have to organise some kind of oil trap & wet air filter to stop the vented gasses leaving any oil that would go on the road, im sure the track operators wouldn't appreciate a few dobs of oil on an apex.
If it isn't the above then i havent a clue.

I would look at re routing all breathers into a catch tank anyway so the possibility of any leakage is not possible anyway.

I didn't know the aussie ZXR's had the carbi emission control stuff?

James the gear im swalking about is under the tank & airbox it just sits on top of the engine ... bout 3-4 hoses & little black boxes that dont seem to do nothing.

I can only think that it is for emission controll.

Just had another look & 3 of the hoses lead into what loks like a dome shaped thinggy that looks like some sort of diaphram

hope the missus isnt reading this

Hmmm ok.
Will have a nose on the microfiche when I get home.
Why not see how the engine sounds with everything disconnected? lol.

That would be great james as my mechanic has my ZXR workshop manual.
Cant check out how it runs caus the motor is not in the frame at the momemt so untill its ready I thought I would look at what can be stripped off the race bike.

The nstuff you're talking about can easily and effectively be removed. some important points :
1. Make sure the small hose coming out of the diaphragm thingy (looks like a spider) is plugged, as it's a vacuum feed to the head
2. The carbs must vent to the airbox, or your bike will run like a Ducati (which is to say, a piece of junk)
3. Ideally you should block off the two larger hoses that feed into the top of the head ; they inject air into the exhaust ports to combust any unburnt fuel, and if you leave them open they will resonate under the airbox and sound pretty friggin ordinary.
If anyone in Sydney needs any help with this, I'm happy to do it for you.
Cheers,
Brian

Not sure what its like on the 7, Brian is the expert there, but on the 9 its pretty simple to remove.
The hoses that come out of the plates at the front of the head cover can be routed to each other and the tubes and diaghram thing can then be removed. One of the tubes goes to the airbox so the hole in the airbox needs blocking.
A rubber chair leg end fits perfectly. The other 2 smaller hoses go to 1 and 4 carbs. Remove the connecting screw with the hole in em and replace it with a std screw, no holes, to block it up.
Its a clean air intake for the exhaust to reduce emissions.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I will be fitting the engine back in the next couple of weeks & will tackle the prob then.

Cool guys, I couldn't deduce much from the miche, haha.
Any performance affects (improvements?) after doing this?
James

A little less weight, nothing else to speak of.
