ZX7R airbox and other mods

Postby HemiDuty » Mon Sep 12, 2005 12:01 pm

OK, on top of trying to sort the GPX out, I am going to do the airbox mod on the 7, detailed on the site MBP has previously linked to. I figure I will do the airbox myself, and then take the bike to a mechanic to have an ign advancer fitted, bike dyno tuned and new pads fitted.

Whilst I have the bike apart, are there any other mods I could/should make to make this thing go better? I await the expert's opinions........

A cheap power up is to get a set of twin electrode spark plugs (CR9EK) i use them on my 7 and you notice a difference straight away good for 2hp.

The ignition advancer is pretty easy to fit, take the cover off use a spanner to hold the advancer and allen key to undo the 8mm bolt then just slip it off then put the new one on, they have a keyway in them so you can only put them on one way.

If you really want to get adventrous, get the cams dialed in to factory specs (easier to do with adjustable cam wheels), motorcycle manufactures are notorious for this they can be out by 4 degrees, once dialed in you can make up to an extra 4-5hp.
You need a degree wheel and dial indicators for this one.

Little mods like this can add up, 2hp here 4hp there the next thing you know you have an extra 10hp for little money, and a bit of time tinkering in the garage.

If you need any advice on other mods just drop me a line.

Cheers,

Matt

How should we choose one that is suitable for our bikes?
Is there some calculation involved?
How does it work?

Pls enlighten.
Thanks

Mark the outside of your spark plugs (near the top) where the gap is and make sure that when you scew in the plug the "open side of the plug" is facing the inlet for air/fuel. You may need a couple of plugs to get all four to face the inlets.

Is supposed to help the spark that throws out to face the incoming fuel/air mixture. Rather then having the back of the tip block the spark. I know we are talking about a silly spark but it does make sense..............

Will it mean more power...........don't know. Try it on a dyno...if you are going that far into the mods!

old drag racing trick that one

you need to get 'index washers' to get all the plugs to sit in the same position

also useful on high PSI Turbos so the spark doesnt get blown out you have the tip face away from the inlet
