anyone bought RM gear?

Postby 99coconuts » Thu Mar 02, 2006 2:26 pm

http://www.rmgear.com.au
just trying to get some feedback for craig (anyone that knows him knows he's not exactly PC literate enuff to do so himself  )

what i want to do here is just get an idea of what people think of this stuff. if you have any feedback, good or bad, i would like to hear it. any suggestions, critisisms, flamage, death threats ( protest.gif ) i would also like to hear, you cant improve if everyone tells you your doing a bang up job

this hasn't been spurred on by anything, i'm just curious as to what people think of the stuff. even if you havn't bought from him i'd like to hear comments....

what do you think of the build quality? (stitching, zips etc)

what do you think of the materials quality?

have you tested your gear at any point, and if so, how well did it protect you?

what do you think of the current designs?

do you think the current range is adequete?

is the website up to scratch? (be gentle, i made that   )

what do you think of the communications and service?

what do you think he should be doing that he's not? (and dont say lower the prices :P anyone thats bought from him knows how concrete they are  )

i think thats it, but i might add to it later. if there are any genuine concerns, leave an e-mail address for me to follow it up, but still post up here so others can see :D

thanks in advance peoples hat36.gif

Wasn't Craig involved with Chris from Scorpion Racegear at some point ??, just wondering, also is the stuff made locally or is it made in Pakistan like almost all the rest of this cheap stuff, I have found after being bitten a number of times anything made in Pakistan is made to a pre determined size and if you need custom fit clothing forget the discount price because all of a sudden the cheap stuff becomes the same price as the name brands if not more expensive, I know I got stuck with a couple of pairs of road/ race pants that are a perfect fit for the waist but the legs are made for a person 6' or more and the jacket, well let's not even go there.
In my opinion have a good think about it, how many guys on the professional scene are wearing $200 jackets or $150 pants or $150 boots, none, stick with the brands that are tried and tested over the years, Dainese, Alpine Star, Walden Miller etc, etc, etc, these companies spend millions on research and get feedback from champion racers. I'd rather pay a bit more and know i'm safe, after all it's your body that's gonna hit the road not these blokes who are selling it nor the person making $15 a week in a sweat shop pumping this stuff out for probably 50 other retailers making the same claim that their gear is as good if not better than those named above. Am I being a bit harsh, maybe but it's your skin not mine. Just give me the name of 1 world champion whose willing to wear this cheap gear and does wear it on the track and i'll buy it.

I have spoken to several people who have had good experiences...

I also believe that PhotoMike bought his leathers from him... IF that is the case he seems very happy with them..

I emailed him about some stuff a few months ago and he got back to me very quickly and seemed very professional...

I bought my jacket through another dealer, its from Pakistan (yes this is in response to the post above) and it is awesome quality.... The point about custom sizing is true, I am a fat fucker and they sent me the wrong size to start with.... got that sorted, I am happy with the fit..... and it looks the bomb...

As far as dianese and alpinestars spending millions on research and development every year and therefore they are the best....... hmmm.. NOPE.... sure they are good quality, but the leathers valentino gets are not the same as the ones you buy off the shelf... they are custom fitted to him, use kangaroo leather instead of moo-cow and have different padding... the stitching pattern might be the same though..... If you want the ultimate in leathers... get fitted leathers... the best for that is TigerAngel over here...

I had a jacket custom made for me an waited with anticipation for 6 weeks, when I got it, GEEZUS, the wrist was 36.5cm around, my wrist is only 18, and the chest must have been about 250cm, and as long as a great coat, it was a total mess.
While I agree that the suit you buy off the shelf is not the same as Rossi's it must be aknowledged that car manufacturers and motorcycle manufacturers use the information gathered from their race vehicles to improve their production models for the road, without this kind of research we'd still be using drum brakes and their would be no such thing as upside down forks or any other nice bits on our bikes, it's the same for the manufacturers of the gear we wear, after all before those guys on the track trialed back protectors we wouldn't have them and other bits and pieces we now take for granted, knee sliders, toe sliders, memory foam, etc. I'm not saying any of this gear you can buy is bad, if you wear it good luck to ya and I hope it keeps ya safe in a spill, and like you said kangaroo leather gear is now available off the shelf thanks to the research done by the guys on the track and the research and money put into that research by the major manufacturers first.

I better put this in so you have a better perspective of where I am coming from, jacket, gloves, pants and boots are all Scorpion Racegear, while I like the gear i've taken a spill in it and it's time to buy new gear, i'm funny like that, I used to wear all Walden Miller gear in the old days and have been thinking of going to Alpine Star or maybe even Dri Rider for the next set, you never know I may even give RM Gear a call, but I really like to see the gear and try it on before parting with the readies, after all if you get the wrong size it comes out of your pocket to send it back.

thanks les and stereo

les, yes it is pakistani gear and yes, craig WAS in kahootz with chris at scorpion for a short while. they started a venture together, building on the business that craig had started with RM and eventually had.... a difference of opinions....
they no longer work together and seem to have very different business ideas now.

quality aside, craig will always provide an exchange or refund on gear that doesn't fit right, even if thats no fault of his own. he tried doing custom gear for a little while and while it worked fine 90% of the time, he didn't like having to fork out for the gear that didn't fit right. he'll still do it if pressed, but he's not real keen on it...

now to the quality...
i do see what you're saying, but i would say all but the best (and most expensive) gear is of a similar (possibly but not always, better) quality as what i'm seeing from RM. i know there have been a couple of others out there that have sold absolute shyte, and thats a bit of a problem for craig cos it doesn't help his name even if it wasn't his gear :? kinda like dainese wouldn't sell jack shit if there were a few real shockers coming out of italy.

i actually ditched a dainese suit in favor of an RM suit, everything but the sliders and liner was on par if not better. and have a good look at some of (not all) the big name brands and where they're made, i think some people might find that a little suprising

and i think the most important thing to keep in mind is that RM is not really trying to compete with the big brands. he's providing cheaper gear to people that cant afford the top shelf stuff. in all honesty, if i wanted the VERY best, i'd probably be out there buying a tiger angel custom suit or something. but i've seen craigs stuff after offs and it holds up just fine, theres no way i can justify 3 times the price for something thats not going to slide down the road at 300kph at any time

anyways, this is exactly what i was after, keep it up
