Euro Helmets

Postby Glen » Fri Mar 10, 2017 6:39 pm

Has anyone compared the weight of an Australian Standards helmet and a Euro Standards helmet? I went into MCAS in the city yesterday looking at Shoei GT Air's. They had an AS certified one and a Euro certified one beside it. The Euro one was so much lighter it was amazing.

Don't know whether it's a good thing or bad thing or what it means but the difference is really noticeable. I'd always heard the Aus Standards were far more stringent than other and it appears to be true.

So what's everyone's opinion on what's best. For mine I think I'd stick to the Aussie standard.

This might help

One difference between the two types of standard is that the European ECE 22-05 does not use penetration to test for “shell integrity”, but instead uses a kerb anvil test and other methods within the suite, such as flexure.

Research in Europe indicates that helmets over 1.5 kg in weight are implicated in neck injury and basilar skull fracture. Helmet weight is increased by a heavy shell needed to pass the penetration test of the Z.90 based standards.

I was wearing an Aus standard GT Air when I crashed the GTR. The outside looked like you could wear it again, but the styrofoam was crushed and cracked in the front left quadrant. It was about 8 weeks old and I couldn't bring myself to fork over another $800 plus for a new one.
I got one from Japan for $600 instead. It is 300g lighter - and has a ratchet type strap which I absolutely love. The only place they can shed that much weight is in the shell thickness. I have no problem with that.

Interesting. Good point re the penetration test verses the Kerb Anvil. Makes a bit of sense as you're rarely going to need protection from a spear coming through your helmet.

Think I might look for a Euro complied lid.

MCAS sell them for the same price.

Presumably you can buy one over the interwebs much cheaper? True?
