A drop from handlebar height will not affect anything but the paint finish. It's the internal polystyrene shell that absorbs the impact in an accident, when the helmet is on your head.

That's probably true of the 1942 German army helmet you wear around but I wouldn't count on it for a multi layered laminated lid

I choose not to believe the helmet manufacturers propaganda urging a new helmet purchase just because the paint has a few scratches ...
