i've got an expandable oxford tank bag
effing fantastic, carries almost everything, and i use it every day

be careful though that no iron filings or swarf gets on the magnetic spots on the bottom, as that will quickly fcuk your tank

and for long haul, iron butt stuff, i use that bag, a tail bag and a backpack that carries enough for me for a 3 week getaway including a tent and stove!

If you use a tankbag - go to Bunnings and get a 1 metre square piece of rubber ? mesh, and cut to size to place under bag.

Ive got the oxford tank bag and love it. The clear window in front is awsome for poping the phone into so I can use the sat nav feature and have a quick look down if I miss a direction from the head pice. Also means I can listen to my tunes without having to have the ipod on me. Just a cord running out the zip in the bag.
I word of advice not all tank bags fit all tank shapes. Try to have a look at all type of bags and get the one that fits your bike. A mate of mine borrowed my bag. The bag just would not sit on his 09 R1 and keept moving off the side of the tank. He went and got himself an R-jays bag and it just dont move as its shape fitted his tank better.
I love my new ZX10. It scares the shit out of me.

I fucking hate tank bags, i use mine every now and then just to remind me how much I hate them ;)

If your deadset sold on the idea there is one option that I rate and that is the bagster. Expensive yes but it protects your tank - lots of tankbags will scratch if you dont take monkey mans advice ;) - and the bag clips to it.

Seat bag or better still and ventura rack with bag or Hoffinator Industries P/L Top Box option is the go if you need to carry more items. I dont usually go anywhere without spare visors, puncture repair kit, wet weather gear and my mug and thermos ;)

If you can wait till they are advertised, the Aldi tank bag is a good buy - 3 sections that zip together & and the magnets stick like shit to a wet blanket. I've never used the straps, and it just stays in place. Clear map pocket in each section.
Only minus is the rain cover, which is black rip-stop nylon, so you can't see map in the wet ..... but who want's to look at a map when it's pissing down ?

I hate the tank bags. They get in the way on a sports bike, for me anyway. I have an expandable seat bag. Clips on and off the seat bra so no having to take the seat on an off each time you want to remove the bag.

I've got the Aldi one too. With the the separate sections you can customise it to be as small or as large as you want it. It is a magnet one so care will have to be taken with your tank as mentioned earlier. I've also got the pack rack and large Ventura bag if need though.

Agree.. small tank bag for work which has 2 extra zip levels (never use because it resrticts movement and is just annoying) and andystrapz bag for the back on longer trips..
I also went this option because i didnt like the look of a rack my bike and top boxes just look ghey.
Go http://www.andystrapz.com/content.php?pid=9&Level=1

When packing loads to the back of bike, ive always been told to load the heavier weight over the seat/cowl with the lighter stuff ie: sleeping bag on a rack over hanging the back of the bike (if you have to) .. heavy back packs on long rides will make you tired..

This is the 18ltre bag.. you can get heaps in. If you feel the need to take your hair dryer, best take a cager

after another thread on here I'm about to get one of these collapsable tail bag things
http://www.wamdistributors.com.au/produ ... gory_id=12
I don't like tank bags and while I'll probably get a rack eventually they look
so ugly I don't want to do that to my new bike. underseat exhausts also limit what
I can put on the seat.

what to get tank or seat bag

Postby Blurr » Sat Mar 31, 2012 8:34 pm

Glad to hear other people hate them as much as I do.

Sure the aldi one has a base with a plastic zipable sleeve which is great for phones, wallets and iPods but are a pain in the arse for if your using it for luggage .

My next bike will def have a bag rack. The tail bags are ok but don't hold enough for trips like Cdt plus they still move around abit as you have to macgyver them down on the newer bikes with smaller pillion seats

I have one that I used once and will never use it again if you want to save some money. $25 for it and pick it up from Eastern Creek next weekend.

I'm with Phil and Russ. I hate using tank bags as well, because they get in the way.
