OS helmets

Postby Blurr » Wed May 04, 2011 9:01 pm

Let me pretext this question before statrting an all out war.

I am not intending on buying a helmet OS to use on the roads, just curious.

So with that said the extremely strong aussie dollar had me trowling some bike accressory sites ( well until my credit card jumped out of my wallet and ran out of the room screaming 'make the bad man stop' like a little girl   ) and I noticed how much we get reamed for helmets over here.

Anyways with the change inlaws recently regarding to the AUS/NZ 1628 stickers I was wondering what the OS helmets have (either US or Europe).

Can anyone shed some light?

You could ask this question about just about every brand name motorcycle accessory, how much is a set of Teknics here.?
Check the price of a new zx10r in US atm and subtract 10%.. :-)

The only excuse helmet manufacturers could use is the additional testing they have to do pass Au specs. Thats why a lot of the smaller manufactures don't bother bringing helmets here, our market isn't big enough to justify the testing / approval costs..

But... as you can use helmets that are not AU approved for racing as long as they have one of the main os approvals, it certainly would be worth getting one for the track...

St George run under MA and I beleive FX use there rules for stuff like this..

From MOM's

15.4.1 Helmet
15.4.1.1 An approved and correctly fitting full-face
helmet which must:
a) Carry the Standards Association of
Australia “AS 1698” label, or
b) Be approved under Rule 01.69
& 01.70 of the Road Racing FIM
Technical Rules [see Appendix 1].

b) is to allow OS riders to compete here with there helmets.

Interesting is FIM don't accept the AU standards..

From FIM rules
2.12.7 Helmets must be of the full face type and conform to one of the
recognised international standards:
• Europe ECE 22-05 ‘P’
• Japan JIS T 8133: 2000, JIS T 8133: 2007
• USA SNELL M 2005, SNELL M 2010

Yeah cheers Dave I saw that last year but it conflicted with what Terry's email said and also was there Marshal's did when I turned up with my TUV helmet.

I just think the scrutineeers get caught up with trying to copy the 5 stick ID number and forget the MOMs

Comparision in what I found atm

Shark RSR2 normally - $799

BikeBiz atm - $499 or $449 depending on graphic
Bloody good price for anybody looking for a top of the line road helmet

Sports Bike track gear - $225 Au + $30 delivery but you can add a few other bits in that package

Yeah, they have to test a certain number of helmets per imported batch. From my understanding, the testing isn't cheap either!

not just the helmets being tested but the manufacturing facility as well for quality and management controls ( needed in case of recall etc ) - all steps in the manufacture process of the helmet from purchase of eraw materials to the completed items has to be documented and quality controlled

all adds up eventually

All my lids road or track are bought from OS, the price difference even when the dollar was not so good still made sense.
As long as you are buying a known brand etc there is no difference. None of the big names are going to make a handfull of lids specifically to suit the AUS standards its the identical lid.
Euro or US asphalt is no harder or softer than ours...

If anyone should there own spec lids it should be NZ....
