Agv Helmet

Postby samuely1 » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:18 pm

Just wondering if anyone has some info on this helmet that I picked up from a garage sale. Agv X-vent is about all the info I can get off the helmet. I can't seem to find this model let alone this color anywhere on the AGV site. . Is it a discontinued model etc? More importantly how much is it actually worth? 8)

I wouldn't be surprised if it costs $400-500 brand new. Does it have a bar code? Do you have an iPhone? THere are some apps that can work out the make/model etc.. Thats just about the help I can offer :D

I think it's an old helmet
There will be a manufacture date on it somewhere, under the liner, sometimes on the straps.

*edit* found them on the net for sale in 2003.

12 years old isn't exactly old new mate. I don' think they will even allow you on a trackdayvwith that?

That was my thought too. Would a helmet, even in correct storage, not have had a certain degree of material degradation after 12 years?

Personally I'd be reluctant to use it.

It's possible to get new helmets for not much more that'd give me more peace of mind than a 12 yo one.

Just my 2 cents tho :D

5 years is what most manufacturers recommend. I wouldn't take my chances on a item like a helmet but it def looks good and for the price you can even use it as art! ;)

The lining usualy rots away after a long time. Either way its a trick looking helmet, & as long as its well cared for would be a nice road helmet. I would build a perspect case for it & stick it on the mantel peice..just my opinion..

Has the helmet been used at all?
What happens with helmets is our sweat extrudes from our heads and into the helmet foam lining, and that is what degrades them.
If the helmet has been used at all, I'd be hesitant to use it (imagine a foam esky over time - it breaks down and falls apart)
The helmet may look ok on the outside, but if it's been used (especially being so old) I'd be extremely hesitant to use it as that foam is what saves your brains (and looking at it won't tell you if it's ok)

Personally I wouldn't have bought it and certainly wouldn't use it, no matter how good it looks on the outside.
I'm sorry Samuely1, I really didn't want to comment, but it is a safety issue.

Helmets are ok being old, if never ever been worn and kept in a dark place, otherwise, no, not at all.

Yeah i would not wear it..5-6 years is generally the mark where its seen its best years behind it..

You generally cant see the wear damage, my shoei has done about 70,000k's in 4 years, i have replaced the cheek pads and if i was to give it a spruce up i could sell it as 'hardly worn'..as it would look ok.. Its not hard to polish a turd helmet..

X vents were pretty much the top of the line for AGV about 10 years ago (up to $600). They were replaced by the X Vent 2 and then replaced again. I had a X vent (McCoy replica) and then a Rossi X vent 2 replica. Both very good helments. I would not buy a second hand helmet as you don't know the history. I would also be very hesitant to wear one that old. Does look good though. If you are going to keep it maybe take it to race meetings to get it signed by various riders and then display it.
