hi guys

Ideally, i would buy 1 piece suit and grab a strap-on back protector for trackday and then get a leather jacket and pant that can be zipped together for street use........BUT I don't have that much $$$ to spend.

I haven't done track-day yet, new to riding and want to protect myself. I only have mesh jacket and rider jeans atm.

Initially I thought about getting leather jacket and pants, something like RS Taichi/Dainese/Berik but I hear alot of people say 2 piece are not good for track since you cant wear a strap-on full back protector and there is a chance the zip may rip if u slide/fall.

I am planning on track day school in about a month
so could u experienced track & street riders answer my concerns:

1) 2 piece not good for track?
2) what are chance they rip apart on a fall?
3) do u take out the stock back protect insert and wear a strap-on if you do go trackday with 2 piece?
4) is wearing a jacket with the back-hump inconvenient for street use? ie backpack, walking around etc

I have 3 options I think:
a) I could buy good quality jacket and pants then rent 1 piece when i go track
b) buy 1 piece quality suit and wear it for both street and track
c) buy cheaper 1 piece suit, jacket and pants

I bought a quality 2 piece suit first up so I can use it on the road and the track, as I spent more time on the road that seemed sensible, then when finances permitted I got a quality one piece for the track...

I would spend the money on your leathers, I have seen cheaper one's come apart at the seams on a minor slide... you do get what you pay for

I've seen plenty of guys use a 2 piece suit at the track with a standard full size back protector and I agree you should get a good quality gear whichever way you go

I wear a seperate back protector and it fits perfectly under my TWO PIECE zip together leathers!!! I am a terribly risky person though, as I use my Zip together two piece ON THE TRACK, as well as the road!!! I should be spanked!!

Two-piece leathers are fine for the track and you can wear a seperate back protector with them without any problems (as long as they fit properly of course). As has been said, the quality of the leathers is more an issue with them seperating, not the fact they've got a zip. You'll also find that two-piece's are easier to get on and off.

If you decide to get into trackdays seriously, or want to start racing, then you might think about getting a set of one-piece leathers then.

So just get a decent set of two-piece leathers, wear them on the road and the track and stop overthinking the whole thing

Good quality 2pce as the other guys said will be fine for the track. And will be more practical for road rides.

Be carefull with Joe Rocket. It's not as good quality as people think. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=26226 I know someone who has repaired quite a few Joe Rocket leathers and they cringe at how poorly they are held together.

You are much better off getting a decent two piece suit. I will be fine for the odd track day and will serve you well on the road. Just make sure it's a good brand that you purchase, not one of these .

Recently I went to winton for the Vic titles round. There was a rider there who happened to crash twice. He was wearing RS Taichi One piece and they held up extremely well. No holes and stitching looked like new still. He even continued riding in them for the rest of the day.

I have crashed (twice) in my Collins two piece. Once on the road and once at the track, both times walked away. Road one was the worst as I got trapped under the bike and tried to tear myself a new arsehole and put a hole in my leathers.

I still wear them (had a patch put over the hole), they are rashed up but still in good working order. I use Knox back protector without issue.

I just got myself a pair of racing/full length leather gloves and Dainese strap on back protector.

As to jacket/pants, I will most likely just rent 1 piece, try out the trackday either this mth or sept and see from there. If I like it, I'll get both jacket and pants, if not just jacket and simpler pants.

Sounds prejudiced. I have had two good offs in my JR suit. No holes, no tears, no burst stitching, no splits seams? I must have been really lucky!

If you look at the Joe Rockets you will find they are by far the thickest leather. 1.3 to 1.6mm..
Alpine star, 1.3 to 1.4.
Tecknic 1.4 to 1.5
Dainese 1.3 to 1.4
So never let the facts get in the way of a good story. Ive crashed in my Rockets & they held up very well indeed.
Must be luck too. All crashers are not the same, & any suit will come apart, even a $4000 custom suit will.
So when I went looking for a new suit I wanted the thickest one I could find, to at least give me a fighting chance of not being hurt. So far so good.
Value for money you cant go past a rocket suit IMO

Looks like the thickness has gone up since you posted this message, now they are 1.4 to 1.7mm.
They seem to be getting thicker everyday
Anyway, I think what really matters most is how good the stitching is along with the design of the product.
