helmet: if the button snaps can you legally restrap?

the button was always difficult to get off with the gloves on and I went to take helmet off in a hurry and its come off

the lighter patch right of the red button had a similar woven button.

anyone had to do strap surgery before if so best method for replacement?

would buying another button, getting an upholstery clamp an tacking it through the material suffice?

I dont see why not as long as the strap goes through the d-rings and nothings broken on the strap before that it should be ok.

I've got a shark helmet with a collar that you can put the end of the strap in to but i dont bother. Mainly because its a pain in the ass to thread through once helmet is on noodle.

If your worried about it flapping around maybe glue/sew some velcro to the end of the strap instead of button

No idea on the legalities.. but the buttons can be bought from sewing supply shops or from leather/saddlery supply places.
They are typically sold as 'snaps' or 'press studs' and will come with a tool that minimize the amount of smushing incurred when applied with a hammer..
The ones from saddlery supply places tend to be a lot stronger and the staff are a little more helpful than the teenagers behind the counter at spotlight or lincraft type places.. As far as I can tell from my lid, it isn't a load bearing point so the ones from spotlight/lincraft should be fine...

They are typically two parts for each half of the button, push the stem of Part-A through the fabric,balance Part-B on the top and bash with a hammer until secure..

those buttons are a pain in the arse and I cut them off my chin straps - then stitch the end of the strap up to stop it fraying. They are only there to stop the strap from flapping around the place - as pointed out already, as long as the D-rings are still in good nick, these buttons are not a structural fitting.

looks like you have a K3 agv, my button snapped off, so i just tuck the strap un between some of the padding

the button is not needed for legality
as long as the webbing goes thru the Drings and is not worn..you are ok

Yup .. definitely looks like an AGV ... i dont think i've ever used the button...... the strap smacking me keeps me awake

Burning the end with a lighter so it melts up into a 2-3mm wide gob of molten plastic and then squishing it flat (i used the body of the lighter) does exactly the same thing. Unfortunately not quite as effective when the straps aren't nylon

close its an agv stealth, pretty good but feels a bit heavy after 2hrs of riding naked wind blast & noise

anyone tried to put sound deadening material behind the removable inserts to make them quieter?

velcro would be good but its effectiveness fails over time and cat fur even when you dont have a cat

Confirmed as per what Gos said - not a structural retention fitting of importance,

Strength of retention system.
When the helmet is tested in accordance with AS/NZS 2512.5.1, with a preliminary
test loading of 225 ±5 N applied for 30 s, and an additional loading of 1110 ±25 N
applied for 120 s, the retention system or its attachments shall not separate, and
the elongation between pre-loading and test loading shall not exceed 25 mm.
Where the retention system consists of components which can be independently
fastened without securing the complete assembly, each such component shall
independently comply with the requirements of this clause.


PS--- My helmets have passed impact and penetration tests now, the two most important ones --- few more to do and all those that complain about a sore neck etc after a long ride will be able to rectify that issue.

In all my years of riding, being pulled over countless times, being booked on slightly-less countless times......... not ONCE have the bronze ever looked at my helmet for stickers. And I have worn some dodgy helmets over the years...... ask Wattie !!
