I was looking at the price of bluetooth headsets for helmets and the pricing is stupid!!

So, I started wondering, why I couldn't pull my wife's Motorola bluetooth ear piece apart and fit that to my helmet? Other than the fact that she'd have my balls for destroying her lifeline, I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Any one tried this? Any one got an excess number of bluetooth ear pieces lying around and want to give it a shot?

I thought much the same thing. Essentially you'd just need to extend the speaker and mic connections and fit the unit itself to the edge of your helmet. Then, I got to thinking of issues such as weatherproofing, dynamic noise cancelling, and fiddly disconnecting and resoldering of wiring and decided it wasn't really worth all the time and effort to develop something that already existed and may not work all that well if I DIY.

If I'd already had a spare headset lying around I might have given it a go, though.

It's the noise cancelling issues which are the problem. I know that with the purpose built units, the caller can hear me at speeds in excess of 160kph with no detremental effects to sound quality either way. It's been worth the $160 odd dollars I paid for it.

slightly off topic, but possibly helpful, one of the guys i use to ride with removed all the padding from his lid, then ever so carefully carved a tiny channel from the base to the ears....in the hard foam .... he then laid in sum earphones, applied duct tape over and then put the helmet lining back in... when he wanted to listen to music etc he just plugged a radio/mp3 into the chord that was hanging free... or duct taped the mp3 player on the outside of the lid....

this may be usefull info if u want to try sumthin similar with a bluetooth system, or a chord system for ya phone...

Ardy, if you want to go down the diy route, i have a bluetooth gizmo here you can *HAVE*. I dislike the things implicitly, just give me your postal address and ill send it to you, it's from my Nokia and i still have it in the box from when i bought the mobile a year and a bit ago. Im pretty sure the manual is in there too.

Wouldn't that compromise the strength of the lid?
The foam is there for a reason isn't it???
I would also think that it would void the Aust standards sticker if it was inspected and then be deemed defected.

Suggest if the groove is minimal then effests on the lid would also be minimal, re the sticker, well my Shoei for one doesn't have a sticker inside the lid (that I can see).

The whole inner shell works as one piece. If you cut a bit out at one side it will affect the whole shell. When you are using this to protect your head you should not take any chances.
How many times have rider trainers pumped the one impact per helmet rule? no matter how small the impact. This is the same thing only you would know that the inner shell has been compromised.
I wouldn't use a helmet that has bits cut out of it know matter how small the pieces are.

Agreed, I just dont think it is safe and I am 99.99% certain its illegal.

it was just a wee tiny scraping across the foam..enuf to stick a speaker wire in....

shit if ur THAT anal about it, just duct tape it without the grooves..under all the padding u wouldnt nitice it neway...

I have two of the blueant Bluetooth intercoms and they work great. the price is steep even at the stand they had at the M/C expo was $249.00, but I got mine from orgoniser world $179.00

A much more sensible price.
The only drawback I have found with them is the 5 hour talk time. But that lets me enjoy the ride home in peace.
They attach to the outside of the helmet.
