You can go to http://www.underdog-leathers.com/ then click on the "Sport & Track" link to see what they look like. I might go for one of them myself come to think of it...

 me, i wear one regularly on rides (UFO with shoulder straps cost me $89 on sale usually can be had for just over $100).
Very comfortable wore it all the way down and back (pardon the pun) to PI from Brisvegas.(The velcro belt holds your guts in for impressing the ladies  ).
I wear it cause it allows me to wear cool summer jackets instead of leather on fast rides, don't know how effective it would be but it costs so little, doesn't cause me any discomfort so i'd be mad not to wear it given the way i ride

I got me one.. A Dainese for $30.
Bought it second hand from a bloke that gave up riding after he saw a friend get killed on a bike.

His loss is my gain, so they say. Still, I'd probably think twice about giving up riding if that sort of shit happened to me.

Mario,
I have worn one every time I ride since 1977 when I broke my back.....the vet said if I had been wearing one I would have only suffered bruising
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.
