leathers in rain

Hey all


with winter approaching was wondering about rain and leather gear.

last summer i purchased a nice leather jacket for riding and all summer been using it instead of my rivet textile jacket.



how does leather stand up to rain?


what do you guys do if your caught out on a day of riding with a freak shower.


i love the leather jacket so much that i am thinkin bout sellin the textile jacket as i dont wear it anyore....prob cause it hasnt gotten cold yet...it has elbow and back protectors on and it great to keep warm.


what are the pros and cons for leather riding?


i was going to buy one of those quick pullover cheap raincoats for the leather jacket but its another expense that just keeps adding to the collection.

i bought a rjays rainsuit for abt $99 ...its like a big pair of overalls to protect ya leathers..works a bloody treat and keeps the wind out...

otherwise i treat my leathers with a dubin type waterproofer (lets have the "dubin rots the stitches" debate again shall we??)..it protects ur leather in the event u get caught out in a freak storm..if im going cross country, or expecting rain i take the rainsuit in my bag (use to fit nicely under the seat of the blade)....

if ur leathers get wet, they dry out all horrible...

well, it doesn't seem to shrink the cows !



it stands up fine mate, has done for many many years.....but keep the textile jacket for really cold winter riding (assuming it has a thermal liner..)

the jacket stays

off to get a waterproof jacket....the local camping store has one....its a bright blue like nekas bike.


suppose if its pissin down a bright colour will come in handy

Most of your textiles have removable liners so if it looks like rain i take my old Dririder with the guts out of it to put over the leathers.
You also need to get some drilled brake lines from kaleco less wieght dont you know....

Only problem i've heard is after a drenching the grains swell and don't give as good abrasion resistance. I've seen leather jackets that have been soaked to the core and they bounced back ok. Just dry it out and give it some lanolin spray to soften it back up.

For showers, dont even bother with the wetsuit, if you keep the leather soft with lanolin it also sort of waterproofs it and keeps most of the water out.

I agree with the old farts. Leather until it's too bloody freezing, and an oversuit if it's pissing down.

you can buy lanolin in a spray can from supercheap just spray it on and let it soak.

I have had my old leather jacket soaked a few times it came up nice and clean.
