Heres a bit of a how to, or how not to.
1. Start by removing all vents and bits that you can and don't wish to paint.
2. Sand the clear coat currently on the helmet back so that the paint will stick. Make sure you get right to the edges of the rubber and in all the recesses around the visor mounts. I didn't do quite a good enough job of this and it ruined all my hard work. I used 800grit wet and dry for this. If your clear is particularly rough you could start with 400grit and then finish it with 800. Then wipe over the helmet thoroughly with prepsol/prepwash/wax and grease remover.
3. Mask off the rubber seals and the face hole. Also apply masking tape about 3inches up the inside lining if it isn't removable. I used tape to do the rubber edging but next time i will use Parma Liquid mask. It should make it easier to paint close to the edge of the rubber.
4. Wipeover the helmet again with prepsol.
5. Spray on your base color. In my case that was white to block out the old pattern and fluoro blue over that. I would then sand it smooth with 800 or 1200 grit wet and dry and wipe over it with prepsol.
Heres where the process will vary depending on the design you choose to paint. I will refer specifically to my helmet jus as an example.
6. Apply tape to the majority of the helmet and draw your design on it. I then cut around the fine lines dividing the two colors. I then removed the tape for the higher color, being pearl blue. I then sprayed silver as a base coat and then the pearl blue.
7. Remove the tape where the green is carefully and allow a full day before taping up the blue area. Then spray silver and then green.
8. Using fastint (auto air call it translucent black i think) i applied the shadowing.
9. I then removed the rest of the tape (not that on the rubber) and allowed it to dry for a full day.
10. I then sprayed 2 coats of Septone Acrylic Top Coat Clear and left it for 24hrs.
11. I then sanded it smooth with 800 then 1200 wet and dry.
12. Ordinarily i would now clean it with prepsol and spary another 4-6 coats of clear, leave it for 24hrs then sand as per 11.
13. I then buffed it with Maguiars Swirl remover and then Maguiars Deep Crystal polish.
14. Put it all back together and your done.
I hope that helps. I managed to screw it up enough that i will have to redo it. When i do i will start another thread with a step by step how to with progress pics.
