what's the hump for?

Postby waynemorgan » Thu Jul 30, 2009 9:15 pm

Just a quick question - I'm looking at some leathers and they can come with a "racing hump" or without. What's the hump for? Aerodynamics or is it a safety feature?

Thanks in advance :D

they do dont they rob :?

ill be making sure my next jacket doesnt have one hahaha.

Other thing is when the jacket rides up sometimes, it can affect your vision since it hits the back of your helmet.

If you have a long neck ;) ..... I am with Dave anything behind the head interferes with the helmet

The hump is race. Althouh I think it's more fashion than anything else (unless your Valentino Rossi). Both my leathers have them but they don't interfere with your helmet or anything.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

The info on my suit states.
"Airflow hump for aerodynamics and whiplash protection."

Thanks everyone,

Madkaw - that's what I've seen mentioned on a couple of sites since first asking the question. In the event of an off the hump prevents the helmet from being thrown back further than it can and therefore reduce the seriousness of neck injury (I guess that's kind of like the air-bag jackets that are becoming available).

so it:

protects
carries refreshments
aides aerodynamics - assuming you can go fast enough for aerodynamics to take affect
make you look faster (might just buy a red bike for that one :D :D )

I still not sure I need one apart from the added protection for whiplash and am a little concerned about it restricting my movement of my head in normal operation.

Will keep exploring options :D
