Mine's getting a bit rank and needs a tub.
What do you guys (and gals) do to clean them?

I remember after a track day in 40 degree plus heat decided my lid was getting a bit manky so i just stuck it in the kitchen sink and used morning fresh on the inside

worked a treat and took a few hours to dry but it was a elcheapo 200 buck helmet so if ya get 18 months out of one of those its time to chuck it out.
More upmarket ones have removable liners so you pull them out and wash them....mister Sheen on the outside and visor

I haven't had a problem yet - but I've heard 'Febreeze' works well.

either take it in the shower and use shampoo
or put it in the dishwasher with some fabric softener
give it a few days to dry out of the sun

Johnson's Baby shampoo.

I febreeze mine after a ride and have had no problems (and I still have my hair). But I can also remove the interior and wash it if I need to too.

I'd be a bit hessitant about febreeze, sure it "locks away" the odour, but still the bits that cause the smell are still there. i just always keep my helmet visor up and avoid putting my gloves in there when its in storage, and it seems ok on my helmet. I'd go the wash with baby soap/shampoo option myself

It's the antibacterial febreze I use
"Safely cleans away germs that cause odors on fabrics"

Reckon dipping the bugger in the laundry sink and rinsing will be the G-O.
Only got the one helmet and I'm riding every day, so I'll have to live with it for a bit longer!

I have a KBC TK-8, all the lining comes out easily and fits back in the same way, then you just chuck it in the washing machine with the rest of your stuff.

But what effect does the water have on the foam inner shell?

It makes it wet

What do you think sweat contains? Or wet hair? O the steam from your breath? If a helmet couldn't handle a splash or two, I'd be a bit concerned

doesnt seem to have any affect on the foam bit, i washed mine out once in 12 months its not like every day sort of thing. Just get some water in there and give it a bit of a shampoo and rince it out then leave it right side up till it dries out.
Its not like putting it in the dishwasher on pot scrub cycle lol, more like warm handwash.

Buggered if I know what it will do, but I reckon I'll find out this weekend!

Rinsing it out in mild soap and water is OK if you really have to. Whether it will impact the glue they stick the comfort liner to the foam with is another issue, but with MX helmets which we fill with mud I've never had a drama.
Avoid drying it upright in the sun etc as that will start to screw the styrofoam.
