i bought an HJC helmet cos i didnt like the Rjays brand, they looked cheap.
HJC is no market leader but i think they make good stuff at affordable prices.
i honestly dont see the fuss in shoei and arai... i cant justify spending $1100 on something that can cost me $300 and do the same job...
I have an R jays leather jacket and gloves, and build quality is very good.

Mate Im sure its ok for what your stage is in motorcycling etc. Might want to upgrade when you get a little more into it, I mean big fast rides where comfort is a big issue.

The reason I now but Shoei lids is simple. My first lid was a HJC and after 18 months and ~40,000km's it was useless - the visor would fly open at freeway speeds, it had got so loose I could life it off my noggin without really undoing the chin-strap and it looked shite. Once I decided to buy better quality lids I also realised how nice it was to have a well ventilated and light-weight lid.
Now I have a cheap KBC VR2 that I use for trackdays, and every time put my Shoei (XR1000) on after I've been to the track I remember why I spent more money on it - they're worth every cent IMHO. My next track lid will be a Shoei TZR for sure.
To the OP, I did have a set of R-Jays leathers and they were OK (I didn't crash test them, somebody stole my jacket) but I think my Collins leathers are nicer and they were cheaper too.

Yeah I have to agree about the HJC's. When I first got it it fit good, but after 6 months it starts to fit like a fishbowl and the visors do not lock down..after the PI trip I had to go and buy another helmet as it just didn't fit firm anymore, so I have gone back to Shoei's. My first Shoei TZ1 was a great helmet and lasted 3 years without any noticeable reduction in fit and quality, however unfortunately came to grief in the Putty-Gate incident. It's good to finally have a Shoei back on after a 2 year absence.
You simply get more life out of Better helmets like Shoei, Arai etc. It is worth the money cause they last 4 - 5 times as long, so spending $650+ is really good value for money once the life span of the helmet is considered.

i too have a shoei TZ-1... as a student brendan i feel ur pain in terms of good gear.... i too cant really afford a $700 helmet but i dont want to skimp exessively on quality as i ride 5 days a week almost every week of the year.....
the shoei fits great but its starting to take a few knocks and bumps and that isnt good for the helmet...
im hoping to hell that the casey stoner replica nolan fits my head cos id love to have that as my new helmet ... has a good rep but not as expensive as a shoei or arai...
i figure that if a racer is gonna wear that brand then id wear it.... so that rules out HJC and RJAYS.......

Just because he is sponsored by them does not mean it is good brand, Nolan has been around for a long time & like other brands they have
cheep ones & expensive ones so really just go with what you can afford.

good call don't worry about upgrading your gear just yet. IMO wait till you upgrade your bike and get new gear then. you will be pushing some boundaries and will need the extra quality and comfort.
