best paint for fibreglass

Postby Mickwitchy » Wed Feb 06, 2013 9:02 am

I know there is other topics about paint out there, but most of the time I cant tell, definitively, if they're talking about plastic or fibreglass fairings.

I want to paint my new fibreglass fairings and I'm looking for opinions on what primer and paint to use so that it's flexible enough for the fibreglass.

I have a compressor so can use a gun but if primer is easier in a can then I'm happy to do that.

I'm no spray painter, but I'm happy with the whole process, just for the right products.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Mick

I use 2K combined single system, no primer, no clear coat, just cut back the fiberglass gelcoat with 800 wet n dry so there is no gloss
& bam instant paint, dries rock hard & has a finish good enough for a tracky.
Would not really advise spraying at home, as the stuff is dangerous, as long as you have good protective equipment then knock yourself out :D

That sounds nice and easy. But I wanna do it at home so what equipment/gear do I need? And where do I source the paint?

Wow that's weird. Could be good but don't want it to be able to be peeled off like that. Once it gets a nick, it's gonna be ruined. I spoke to a paint shop today and I think I'm just gonna go acrylic. I have to prime the panels first, but no clear coat and less dangerous for me to do at home in the 'rage....

Plus that should give me an idea on if I'm any good at it

how big a compressor do you have if its only a small one eg 24 cfm which you find in most garrages and garden sheds best used for tyres and footies i would recomend using a high volume low pressure gun [ gravity feed ] as a normal venturi syphon gun will use up your air and start splattering once pressure gets low. Go with acrilic paint if you stuff it up its easily fixed with a rub down
If it aint broke don't fix it just gain more horsepower

Thanks guys. Not sure about the compressor, but used acrylic with a pressure fed gun and turned out alright. Good enough for the track anyway without clear

I recently did the fibteglass fairings on my trackie with colour-matched spray cans from VG Autopaints and the results are not to bad in my opinion!

Prep work is everything!

If you get a bad run; let it dry for at least 24 hours then try to sand it out with 1500 grit otherwise you'll probably make it worse or I did at least!
