Wow that red line which I gather is the run with the dismantled air box & full exhaust looks lean and more so seriously lean in some spots!

If its any help mine made 29.6rwhp @ 10000rpm & 17ft-lb of torque @ 6000rpm with an AFR of 12.6.1, mods; full Area P exhaust system + K&N air filter; Fuel BP Ultimate

Which is on par with what the seppo's are making with identical mods, with jetting + de-snorkel mod they are seeing numbers of 31-34rwhp.

If I was to keep the bike I would probably venture down that path, however since I am coming off restrictions in july, doesn't seem feasible.

Look forward to seeing your results.

I cant wait to get it back this afternoon. One dyno run will hopefully have a comparision for a ZX10 just for some laughs!!

BF picked it up from http://www.repairmanual.com/ along with a factory manual for his GSX-R 750 1991 - the online copies for that are shittier than the bike!
(It's about the fourth link on the first google page for "repair manual Ninja 250R")

Onto more carb stuff.

Popped into MotoGarage with the BF to deliver Brett a hearty beverage to fire his spirits after a long week of work, and check out the progress on Buzz.

Carbs are fitted! Onto PornV2.0! Carb PornV2.0 that is!

Image
Carbs installed, they clear everything nicely with a bit of <James May>Cocking About</James May>.

Apparently you can run these with the stock air box. Air boxes are for suckers.

Image
Now that's better!

Image
Lots of space with the airbox gone. Don't care about the weight loss but it is cool :).

Image
Niiiiiiiice.

Image
Not much to her when she's apart!

Image
Throttle cable touches the hose, so some protection is needed here.

It has a really strong throttle now, much stiffer. One of Brett's offsiders commented that they could just disconnect the throttle return cable, but "CRs... they don't always turn off". So best to live with the stiffer cable from the stiffer throttle spring and use the push-pull throttle cable as Keihin intend :D.

The bike starts and idles, no tuning done yet. Soon!

Silly question but is there a reason you're hotting up a 250? are you intending on keeping it for ages, or you going to up size as soon as you legally can? Don't get me wrong, Its nice to read about, just curious about the motivation

Nice!
Good to see someone doing something other than, Pazzo's, tank pad, rim stripes, blah blah....
Those carbs look nice. Do they have an accelerator pump? What cams do you plan on using? And please keep the dyno charts coming! I'm aiming for 30hp out of my BR also, but I think I'm going to need cams to get there. These twins seem to be a bit closer to 30hp to start with, and I'm keen to see how they respond to some souping up.

Two steps forward, one step backwards.

We went out to MotoGarage inspected Brett's handiwork after heading to the Canberra Show last Saturday. mmmmm GREEN Fairy Floss!

The Carbs were in etc, but weren't setup.

Come Monday, they'd been dynoed. MUCHOS POWER! But an incredibly nasty flat spot between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle. A flatspot is expected with CRs; the throttles open instantly. But there's a difference between flat but rideable and "wind the thing as rich as possible and it still sucks". Damn.

Turns out no-one's ever really set these up with K&Ns before & a really nice full system, not at least for bottom-end quality too. After the BF and I emailed a few places to find out what's recommended, it turns out people accept they have to ride around it. Since Brett thinks things can be made better (with time and lots of tuning), but I want Buzz back soon, we're doing an interim measure: standard carbs tuned to suit exhaust and pod filters.

Note, this is interim only: we'll modify the airbox to run the Keihin supplied velocity stacks which apparently cures most of the bottom-end woes with the CR31s. Woot woot! Problem is it's not easy to run the stacks inside any easily available air filter setup: time for making a big-arsed opening into the airbox, using some air filter foam, and putting the velocity stacks inside the airbox.

Most people run the velocity stacks bare (e.g. see this GPX here: http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum/kawasaki-streetbikes-sportbikes/34097-ninja-ex250r-owners-mod-shop-x-e-ryder-5.html). Ugh. Filters are useful on street bikes!

Mike from Power-Barn (the supplier of my carbs) suggests this is the best way to retain something resembling a bottom end (as small as it is in a 250) without losing any top-end.

As I said, two forwards, one backwards. Stay posted for interm results one, and the 'how to mod your airbox to make the damned velocity stacks fit and work awesomely' thread.

I realy love the work your doing !! keep up the good work , ive never moded any of my bikes much, but ive been doing a car for 4 yrs so i know how your feeling with the 2 steps forward 1 back, it gets real frustrating sometimes but it's well worth the pain when its finnished :D
If you have it under control you don't have enough Power

We've taken the CR31's off for the moment, still waiting on smaller jets and they're going to be a few weeks away - so the standard carbs have gone back in for the time being and have been jetted and tuned. 29hp with just a bit jetting! WOOHOO! hehe, I didn't care so much about the power gain (as much as it is cool) I just wanted to do something different and working closely with my mechanic, we just wanted to see what we can pump out of it, seeing as most people don't bother because they upgrade after 12 months and it'd be a waste of money to mod a Learner bike!

Anyways the Ninja is going on the back burner for a month or two, preparations on my Suzuki RGV VJ21 for racing in April are now going to be taking up my time!
