Hey guys

I'm looking to get my wheels powder coated, I've just brought a zx7r and I don't like the purple and green color scheme. Anyway I want to get my wheels done and was wondering if anyone knew of anyone good in Sydney? Also If you've had it done before is there anything I should look out for?

Dont powder coat them..... its too thick & heavy.

How much weight would powder coating add?

a bit ...... I would be more worried about the finish as it goes on in a heavy coat so sharp recesses would be rounded off, its hard to explain.

I've had a bike that I bought with painted wheels (not powdercoated) and they were brilliant. I once looked into getting the colour changed and the consensus was stay away from powdercoating. I think you have problems if you get a nick changing tyres as well as they're more susceptible to chipping etc

Thanks for the speedy replies guys, I thought powder coating would be more durable but if you all think it doesn't matter then I'll get them done the same time I get the fairings done in 2PAK, maybe an extra coat of clear on the wheels might help them last longer??

i've been told the same in perth, i'm getting 2pac now with polished edges, photo's fri. had a look a rims there. yep, very very nice. cant wait 2 put em on

They look awesome, I'm starting the pull apart this weekend can't wait for it to look all nice and new.

when u get them done, c on front rim where brake disc goes,,,, make sure they dont paint it, i now need to
take this area back as it may upset brakes in future. not a 100% on all reasons but why risk it. cheers
any mech fitters out there want to add to this ?

Soda Blasting is the go, it is more gentle than sand blasting & gives a better finish

Hi i've just seen this thread i work for a powdercoaters on the northern beaches there are pro and cons to both powdercoating and two pack i've worked with both for a good few years, because of the temprature required to cure powdercoat (200c for 15 mins) any bearings, valves tyres etc need to be removed, you can't powdercoat over two pack it will just burn off and bubble up, there is a limited range of colours available in powdercoat.

As for weight and thickness there ain't much difference between the two both should be appliled to around 50-100 microns two pack would be at the higher end of this by the time you have an etch primer,surfacer and colour coat and maybe a clear coat if there both properly applied and cured i'd say they're both as tough as each other, two pack being cured at a lower temprature can be applied with the tyres on the rims (just get the beads broken and put some masking tape around the tyres) and bearings, valves in place.

At the end of the day the finished product is all dependant on the preparation, sand blasting (a general term, they very rarely use sand these days) is quite a rough finish which will need more primer and sanding to cover up but it will remove any corrosion, i've not had any dealings with soda blasting does any one know if it removes corrosion? i have a small chemical strip tank at work which i have stripped wheels in but its not ideal as again it doesn't touch the corrosion.

As a rough guide i'd charge $150-200 depending on the colour to coat a pair of rims that were stripped/blasted and had the bearings removed i'd mask the bearing and disk mounting faces.

I have no doubt you'll find people who can do it cheaper but to be honest its not what were set up to do.

Short answer.... yes & it leaves the surface smooooooooth In effect it is still removing part of the surface the same as other abrasives.
