Aftermarket zx9r fairings

Postby maraach » Mon May 12, 2008 9:56 am

Sorry to anyone who has already seen this post at kawariders. I'm just trying to maximise my potential answer pool.

Just wondering if anyone could give some advice on after market fairings? I'm looking at getting a set for my 2000 ZX9R.

Basically my original fairings are in mint condition and i hope to try and keep them that way. Going on a ride in a couple weeks time which involves quite a few unsealed roads and basically would rather not risk the fairings to drops or a barrage of stone chips.

I found a set of PVC ones on ebay that are pretty cheap (US$380 + US$225 postage) of the guy can make ABS ones for (US$530 + US$225 postage). He will also paint them however i like (apparently).

Im just thinking though, if i go the second option realistically im looking at around $850 - $900 AUD. I've read mixed feedback about the quality of the fairings as well (some say they are great, others say they are rubbish).

Would i be better off trying to source some fairings from wreckers? (i have no idea how much they charge). Dont mind if they are a bit scratched up as that is the whole point of the exercise.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience? I considered race glass, but from my understanding i'll have to modify it to get it street ready and by the time i factor in the cost of paint i'm looking at well over $1200.

Also am i confused, or would race glass be a lot more brittle than plastic fairings? On one hand im thinking that fibreglass is a more brittle material, but on the other i dont understand why they would make something that breaks easily for race use.

Anyway im kind of out of my depth here so any information is appreciated.

Slap a request in http://www.findpart.com.au for zx9 2k fairings see what comes back, you can "probably" get a set of serviceable fairings that aren't going to look that shit hot reasonably cheaply I would think.. real prob you might have is that often the thing that is damaged the most on a faired bike is indeed the fairings... but you got bugger all to lose by putting the request out there..

Thanks for that Mick,

Yeah i figured my chances of getting a whole set are pretty slim, but if i can get say, a set of LHS fairings from one bike and a set of RHS from another... the front one is going to be the one i really struggle with i think.

Cant seem to get that website working from work. I'll give it a try when i get home.

By the way.... name sounds familiar.... didnt happen to ride a zxr250 at one stage did you?

Nope, Gilera scooter way back, then ZZR600 for 3 years or so and now a zx9.

Same place I got my screen and fairing from. Screen arrived in under a week, while the fairing took almost 2 months to arrive. Patience can take a long time ...

There is some '96 zx9r race glass on http://www.aus-superbikes.com.au/ under classifieds --> view by date entered --> first one in 2008 week 18
"..This is a complete set of race glass for a 1996 zx9r. It comes with 2 tails and a tank so you can do track days on your zx9 without worrying about scratching any of your original bodywork if ya go down. It is matt black, with the tank in grey. I can paint it for you for an extra $500. Im in the southern highlands, around an hour south of sydney, in moss vale. *"

You'd have to cut some holes for lights etc, but it might be worth it.
