Hi all, I have a shallow dent on the top of my fuel tank. It looks like I might be able to push the dent out from behind but Im presuming that I can only do this if the tank is a single layer.
can this be pushed out? or does the tank have a double skin layer?
its a 99 ZX6

Single skinned but it will depend on where it is as to if a spoon can be inserted, or it may have to be slide hammered back out. (Weld a slide rod and smack it back out). Alternatively you could cheat and bog it!!!!

Nothing wrong with having a dented in tank.
Just stick some rubber to it.
Covers up a mulitude of sins and makes the surface grippy

Depending on what tools you have access too, how much the dent annoys you and how keen you are.
If it has no "creases" then it MAY pop out with a bit of air pressure, beware popping out "dents" you dont want too. Epxerience is a wonderful thing. You may go as far as taking out the "dents" for your legs or spreading the tank so you need a compressor that will allow different pressures (is it called a regulator?) Just stuffing rags down the fuel filler HAS worked for me before but it helps A LOT is you have a friend (or panel beater) that has done it before.
Once you start cutting holes in the bottom to push the dent out (from underneath) you are looking at least some panel beating and bog unless you are REAL lucky (but then you wouldnt have the dent eh? )
If you ARE lucky maybe you can get at it through the filler but the chances are slim.
Dont be tempted to try a long screwdriver up the petrol tap hole, you WILL leave a worse mark.

thanks guys, seems that their is a little more involved. the dent is about 12cm long and about 8cm wide in an oval shape on the left hand side of the fuel cap and the fuel cap also dips a little on the left. So I dont think I'll be able to bog it untill I staighten up the cap at least. probably 3mm deep.
Any ideas what I could use to push it out with. Im thinking of some U shape thingy with a flat/round shape thingy on the end.

Try dent busters, they use powerfull suction cups to remove the dent. With no marks or desructive measures. They could use other names down there so look up dent removal in yellow pages..

I rang a shitload of those companies when i had a similar dint in my 7.

None will touch a bike tank spesh not on a crease.

They wont pop them out with air pressure anymore (blows the seals in the tank, end up costing you $$$ to fix)

Bout the only real way to do it is to pull the dint out and get the area repainted and stickered.

Amen to that. The slide-hammer is your friend. Forget the U-shaped thingy with a roundy-squarey thingy, that is the stuff of nightmares...

I knew it had a walrus and i spotted a polar bear in there once, but seals ???

Theres a filler and a fuel tap, what are these seals of which you speak ?
I would be more worried about blowing seams, BUT I did say to use a regulator

Which would explain the amount of donuts and why they stayed up instead of falling to the floor...
