CEMENT ON MY FAIRINGS!!!

Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:15 pm

hey, i was stuck behind a cement truck for about 10 seconds a couple of days ago and yesterday i found specks of cement all over the front of my bike and side fairings!!!

the specks range in size from 1mm - 5mm in diameter

im wondering what the best way is to get this off without marking the fairings..

will soapy water and gentle rubbing do the job?

Also .. whats the best way to get rid of those pesky tar specks that crop up at the bottom of the fairings?

cheers :D

Water for the concrete & white spirit (dry cleaning fluid)for the tar as it wont hurt the paint finish

Turtlewax bug & tar remover for the bugs & tar of course ;)

concrete is hard water wont budge it.

only real way to remove concrete will be to wash the spot with acid (burnies, so not reccomended)
if you scrub it it was just scratch the prap outta ya bike.

i'd get a stanley knife or scraper, and carefully try and pik it off without getting the paint. :?

I always use WD40 on the Tar and then wash straight away, as for the concrete....uh oh :?

wd40 or similar works well on tar. Did you try and pick of the cret with your finger nail? Don't be surprised if the cret has marked the paint with all the nasty chemicals that in that shit theses days.

Acid? :?
mate when they did my back porch and laid a whole lot of cement, some of it hit the windows, soapy water and a gentle touch got those specs off without a problem.
If you leave them there long enough, then they will become a problem. ( i missed one and now several months later that bugger wont budge)

but try the fingernail first. if they are that small they should be easy to come off without attempting to melt your bike with acid

ok then! .. if you are ever stuck behind a cement truck and get cement on your fairings.. warm soapy water and lots of rubbing will get it off (and careful use of a fingernail).. but be prepared to spend a couple of hours on it ..

thanks for the help guys! the old girl is looking a lot hotter now!

It wasn't me this time, must have been a Queensland trucker going by the avatar (heart slows as I wipe brow quickly).

If you are ever in Sydney I could coat the whole bike for you, I'm good a putting it on.......

To get it off we use acid specially designed for washing our trucks, but as has already been said I don't know if I would like try it on a plastic fairing.

If you do want to try it, go along to a concrete plant except Readymix or Cemex (owner drivers), try a Boral plant as they are company trucks. Tell them that one of their trucks splashed concrete on your bike, they might give you a sample of the acid and water it down heaps... say 30/70 (acid 30). Try a sample on the bellypan, inside the fairing, or another obscured area first. see how you go.............
