Hi all, found out about this forum after some bloke stuck his head out the car window at a set of lights and handed over some forum stickers.. Not bad!

So i'm piping up now cos i'd like some advice. Basically the bike i'm on (a '99' zx6r) has developed 1st gear issues as in it likes to jump out of 1st gear when a fair amount of throttle is applied (even if i stand on the gear selector). I've been riding around for a few thousand k's and it runs fine as long as you dont juice it up in 1st gear.

So i'm just wondering what are the likely components that will need replacing? Most places have been advising of a rough $1500 for the job. Is this about right?

And has anybody got their bike repaired at Cosways in the city before? Are they any good??

Feedback appreciated.. as i'm doing my head in about weather or not to get it repaired or just get rid of the bike and get a 1000cc

How old's the oil in it?

Ok i'll admit, i've been riding around with the bike in this condition for 18,000 k's. So i've done 3 oil changes

One of the boys up here has problems with his ZX6 gearbox as well - jumping out of gear, etc etc......

It has gone in to the local dealer for some internal repairs.... I think its a later model than yours, but issues sound very similiar.....

Do a search on the site for 'ZX6 gearbox', and all the relevant posts will be listed........knock yourself out mate.

oil change first thing and then a clutch adjustment
and a chain adjustment

still doing it...???

I can't imagine you've done 18,000k without adjusting your chain, and wouldn't expect a clutch issue to make it jump out of gear. As long as you're using the manufacturer reco oil type, I'd say it's probably gearbox internal. Mine only ever jumpes out with really old oil or a lose chain.

Wouldn't recomend standing on the gear shifter, puts all sorts of un-necessary pressures on the box

Fnaaarrr... that has worn dogs written all over it. To fix that, you gonna have to.... (pregnant pause)... split the cases.

Yup. Have to pull the motor out, pull the motor apart, then reverse the procedure. There's a solid couple of days' work in that, and the parts that'll need replacing aren't cheap, either... nor are they something that anyone's likely to have in stock. Prepare yourself to have your bike spend a month or more with its spread out on a workbench.

Since you've been riding for as long as you have with the problem, there's a fair chance there'll be more than just the first gear clusters that'll need replacing...

To help you decice, consider the following: with a blown gearbox, your bike's worth two grand... less as a trade-in.

argh...... it's just so wierd because i can accelerate all day long in 1st gear with some decent throttle and then all of a sudden i take off in first...and it will just bounce out and then slam back into gear.. and that can happen under very LIGHT acceleration...

is it possible that only SOME of the dogs that engage the gear are worn? So its a bit like pot luck if i get the worn ones when clicking into 1st which determines if it will jump out or not?

Does this sound right considering i haven't really seen a sequential gearbox in real life??

Still totally unsure, i can see a '00' R1 for $7,500 with 28,000 on the clock. But if i'm going to get diddly $$$ for the zx6 than theres no point...

Dun work like that. In a nutshell, the way it works is like this:

-There are two shafts, the input and the output, each with six gears on it.
-On each shaft, half the gears are splined on, so they rotate with the shaft, and half spin freely on bearings.
-A splined gear on the input shaft mates to a free-spinning gear on the output shaft, and vice versa.
-The free-spinning gears also slide along the shafts, under the action of selector forks, and mate with the splined gears by means of dogs.

So, all the dogs on a sliding gear engage together. While it's possible only one of them has failed royally, instead of all of them being a bit worn, the prognosis is still pretty dire, and the long kms you've done with the gearbox doing that won't have helped things.

If you end up keeping it, book it in to get it fixed *now*.

that sounds awful cheap for a 2000 R1 ...


i happen to know two people who have traded in bikes at dealers with stuffed gearboxes (either no 2nd gear at all, or would jump out of 2nd) and just rocked up there on the bike looking all clean and shiney with cash in hand, and got a reasonable figure for a trade in ... ride away on the new one with the bike shop not even test riding the trade in


no im not suggesting that you rip off a used vehicle dealer... after all they are such upstanding citizens

well yeah i could prolly get away with that even if they did a test ride cos the thing doesnt' jump out much.. only rarely
infact thats how i got conned into buying it privately...when i test rode it, everything was sweet

Keep in mind you can buy another engine for about $1500 with a warranty from a wrecker. Then it's a half day job in the swap over and you'll have a spare motor for spares or you can flick it to cover some of your costs. Don't buy the 98' R1.!!!!!! They are renowned for the exact same problem. My mate has his rebuilt 3 times before he decided to sell it.
