trackie is officially rooted....

For general Technical and Performance Discussions

Should I repair my $2000 track bike with $2000 rebuild. OR hold out for a suitable wreck to come up at auction for around$2-3000 and turn this one into parts?

Glenn, is the $2k for the parts and you do it or is it the fee to get it done?

If you can get another wreck for similar bux, you might be better off because of all the spares, but on the other hand rebuilding does contain within it the opportunity of extracting more power......

Sad to hear this man, was really hoping you would come racing this season. If you need a hand anyway let me know.

Thats $2000 for a bloke to rebuild it for me.

I had a look in that ZX6R service manual PDF that i got off Bob and I've got no where suitable here to pull an engine down and rebuild. Its like a sterile procedure, clean components with alcohol and leave tagged and laid out....then repeat with every engine part.

Keeping everything clean while i rebuilt it under the house in the swirling dust cloud of two cattle dogs would be a nightmare...unless i do it IN the house....and i thats a step i don't want to take...one room is filled with bike parts already....

Oh and this track bike has no compliance place, it states in the MC sports men super stock rules that bike needs a compliance plate denoting capacity, year etc.....

If i do rebuild the engine in this bike i may not be allowed to race it at all.

You reckon i can get a 636 into c and d grade eh hemi??

Get some more quotes.....

$4k for a race bike is bloody good...

If nothing else, get it fixed, then sell it as a race bike...

Aside from the engine, the bikes in good nick component and finish wise?

if the only thing thats crap is this busted motor, i'd sasy invest the money back into the same bike, else if you put 2-3k into a new bike, your buying a bit of an unknown and could have endless levels of fucking about to get THAT right too.

We did a head gasket replacement on a bike at the SuperMotard the other weekend. There was dust and shit everywhere but we didn't have any problems. As long as you keep it reasonably clean and wipe stuff over as you put it back together it should be fine.

Is that Quote for big ends only no mains bearings and no journal regrind ????has the bike/engine been stripped to give this estimate or are there other surprises once committed if its just big ends should be able to be done without stripping the top end
If this is the case you should be able to do it your self

I aked in a diferent thread this morning but what is involved in the rebuild?

Is it bigends and rings aka kero rebuild because it sounds a bit dear for that.

Or is it a reconditioned bottom end i.e. short motor because i would reckon it would go for quite a while after one of those.

Did you try alex?? he does some of that stuff like wales drag motors and ducatis and stuff and as it hasnt grenaded yet if you took the engine to him it might not be so bad.

We used to do them at home when i was a boy....dad was a fitter mechanic :D so replacing a piston wasnt a big issue.

Could just crack the engine and slip in bigends if it doesnt look too sad like big scoremarks in the crank but it doesnt sound like there will be.

Or you could sell it to me. :D
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

Glenn, ring Rachael at the Sporties to be sure, but yeah you should be able to race it as a 600 at QLD level. If you do rebuild it with go fast bits, it will not be eligible for Superstock600, but Supersport is better anyway man. At club level you could end up with a very competitive bike.

But as I say ring Rachael at the Sporties on 32626677 BEFORE you go any further and weigh up your options. Give me a call too and I will talk to you about it all.

Don't let this get you down man, just use it as an excuse to get something better out of it and your situation. Everytime something like this happens to me, I do not just fix it, I make it better and faster, more capable and funnerer, if I can afford too.

Call Rachael then call me. I am keen to help.
