flooding engine

Postby bobcat » Mon Mar 27, 2006 10:06 am

i have posted a few question about my zx2r petrol problem. i've recently discovered that the petrol wasnt leaking from any hoses, it was coming from where the air filter sits. i was wondering why is the engine always flooding and what i can do to stop this problem? i can get the engine started but then the petrol starts dripping out again and the engine stalls. is it as simple as draining the oil and cleaning up the excess petrol and it should go or is it my petrol line. cheers - bobcat

mate, heres a suggestion, REPLY to the threads where people like myself/others give answers, that way we can help you narrow things down without causing 100000001 threads to pop up with further questions here and there.

As its coming out of the air filter, as you say, then it sounds like its coming out of the carbies themselves, which means the floats are stuck open still

Also, have you done anything i've suggested, like turn the tap off, drain the float bowls and then give it another go? Have you checked the oil level and made sure it was the same as it was before you had the major flooding debacle? if its about the same as before, dont bother changing the oil. If its risen significantly, THEN worry about changing the oil.

What are the selection on the fuel tap on the ZX2R?

The ZZR250 has ON-PRI-RES.

the bike has on, pri and res. when ive beeen parking the bike overnight. ive been putting it on pri which is why it flooded in the first pace, correct? i'll always leave it on on and change it to reserve when needed.i've drained the oil because it was full of fuel. ill refill the oil and hopefully that has fixed the problem. if not what else should i look for?

On - pri - reserve..

ok, put the bike onto "ON" and leave it there unless you have a need to use prime or reserve. There is a vacuum operated switch linked by a hose from the leftmost carby manifold that allows fuel through ONLY when the engine is running, this is why there isn't an "off" position on your carby.

The ONLY time you ever need to use PRI (prime) is when you prime the carbies after you've run them dry (i.e. after draining/fixing them or running bone dry outta fuel etc). Just leave the bike on PRI after filling up for a minute or so to allow it to refill the carbies, then turn it back to ON.

The only time you need RES (reserve) is when you've drained the mains and need to use reserve to get fuel to the motor to get to a servo.

My brothers gpz had one of those vacuum type taps. The diaphragm shit itself and the pots filled up with gas. When he went to start it he bent the crank :x

might want to replace the diaphragm too
