When to check oil.

I check it basically everyday. But I'm wandering what position should the bike be?

When it's on the side stand my oil level is a little over the lower line on the window. But then when I straighten it up the oil line goes over the top line and virtually fills the whole window.

Now I've heard it should be checked on a rear stand which would mean I have wwaaayyy too much oil.

Basically. Side Stand or Rear Stand to check oil level?

upright with both wheels on flat ground.
rear stand makes it move to the front and lowers the level a bit.
definately not on the side stand.

what he said

I check mine on the center stand, there the back wheel is a little off the ground but my carport slopes up slightly so it compensates. It doesn't have to be that exact anyway just levelish ground, but not on the s-stand that's for sure.
Most bikes should have enough oil in them to reach or cover the top line in the sight glass. In my ZZR the accepted norm is to the very top of the sight glass.

the manual for my zx6 says it has to be between the two lines, not over the top line or below the bottom line, i have mine close to the top.. too much oil can be verrry bad!

hmmm seen it in cars. To much oil = broken rods and stuffed pistons. If your lucky it will only blow seals. Oil splashes up and hits the bottom of the pistons. Not a nice ending thats for sure
