Hey everyone.

I have a problem with my bike..not really a problem (i don't think!) as the bike runs fine etc..but when every i rev past 6000 rpm i hear a rattling noise...kinda like a pin being shaken in a tin, but this only happens past 6000. It must be pretty loud rattle cos i can hear it over the muffler.

Any ideas wat is it or if it's bad...cam timing gone wrong <---(kinda made that up cos someone told me about it before :P )?

thanks again

sorry 2000 zx6r

if you run 91-Octane bats piss, expect it. You need to run 95 or 98 Octane in these bikes......

If you are already running 95 or 98 octane, then you *may* have a carburettor issue and/or ignition timing issue (too lean/too advanced).......

I run BP 98 all the time with exception of when i goto the spur. HMM..i'll just have to get this checked out on my next service.

If you're really concerned see if can hear it if you hold the bike over 6 in your garage.

Wait till your next service eh? Why not, probably just the the cam chain trying to tap a hole in the case.

I have a similar noise on my gpx250. It has been there since I bought it and I am not concerned. I can hear it when stationary occassionally but generally not. My noise occurs at about 9000-10000 rpm and dissappears after that. I do have a lot of keys on my key ring though and I havent checked that ;) Maybe thats something to check.

Dmeanr (from another thread) wrote:before i found out that i had to replace them was that, you start to hear a constant tapping noise apart the one that the engine makes and it getting louder and louder as it wears out. Within a week mine sounded like a jack hammer even with me standing inside the house and the bike across the road.

Dont think it would be that bad.

I know, but I'm paranoidly diligent when it comes to odd sounds and maintenance.

what would this do?...i think i did it last time and there was a noise still...i'm pretty sure it's nothing loose or the keys.

Just rules out things that aren't moving/making noise when the bike is stationary. Also allows you to try to nail down the noise. Take off the seat and tank and have a listen. Its not just the valve train by the way? kwakas always sound clattery. Your not getting near a valve clearence check are you?

Like I said, I'm paranoid about sounds, one because I hate to break down and 2 because I just "Luve" the purr of a well tuned mechanically spot on bike. But a lot of people don't don't mind if they rattle or bang a bit. I was only joking about the cam chain  I rode with a badly worn one once and it made a dragging shuss shuss noise rather than a tapping one. At least under power.
