Damned Stick Coil

Postby javaman » Mon Sep 12, 2005 8:34 pm

So I've been whining for few months now that my beloved J1 is not happy running around 2000rpm mark (some sputter) then smooth again. Difficult to lane split :(

So then I thought it was the synchronisation but not keen to spend $200 for service when I'm not really sure.

So thanks to the $10 carb synch, I was able to proof that it was not carbies afterall !!! Whew...

Looking at other place I finally found the culprit. It's the stick coil. Funny thing is it is operational and the OHM measurements are fine! Only when I plug-and-unplug the coils I was able to isolate on one particular stick.

So off to Brighton Kawa and was quoted $215 for new one (not happy).

Off to the wrecker in Heidelberg, got one for $75

All smooth now :D :D :D

WOW!
I wonder how much those pain in the ass things were..... figured they'd be expensive!

so, when they go bad, that is what happens?! good to know! thanks Java!

how Kay's R on your J1? I've got 50G, so will I be needing to replace them soon-ish (I've gotta replace just about everything else atm.... may as well add on those!!! )

I followed the instruction in manual (1.6Ohms for primary & 8 or so kOhms on Secondary). All good according to measurements. So yeah, ruling out things is the best to go (works in IT too...)

My J1 is 72K
