Centre stand and lazer exhaust

Postby B-line » Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:31 am

I have a GPZ900r A1 with a lazer on it, somebody has taken the centrestand off at some stage, would it be because the stand would hit the exhaust ??, all I can say is not having the centrestand is a pain in the arse !

Quite possibly- I had a Megacycle exhaust on my GPZ900, and the centrestand had to be dumped to fit it- drove me nuts, and I dropped the bike several times trying to service it......ended up tying it to the ceiling via the handlebars to keep it level....

It might have been removed simply for ground clearance.
Centre-stands are very practical, but they do get it the way in corners.

Check on the can, it should have a small bracket with a rubber pad. That is what the stand will rest on. If the can doesn't have that then the stand may become a pain. When I got a can for my CBR I went out of my way to find one that had the bracket, they were few and far between. If it is just for servicing and stuff paddock stands are always an option.

Lasers must have been the system of choice for GPz900s. My 900 had a Laser system and a centrestand. The bit that the held the stops for the centre and side stand was a bracket that bolted to where the left hand muffler originally went. If memory serves it was just a couple of pieces of flat bar welded together into an angled T and then galvanised. What is currently serving as the stop for your sidestand? A bracket or does it just swing up until it stops?

Hi

Postby B-line » Fri Sep 02, 2005 4:11 pm

yeah I have the T piece but someone has sawn off the back half for some reason, since I did this post I bought a centrestand and tried to get it on, it fits ok but I can't get the spring on so have temporarily given up, well until I get enough patience built up to try again anyway !

Thanks for your reply

The springs can be a bit tricky. Try getting a piece of fencing wire and bending one end into a hook and the other end into a T handle. You don't need as much leverage as if you try with pliers or a screw driver. Less likely to take an eye out too. Be careful anyway. Murphy knew what he was talking about.

A few people I have spoken to had to remove the centre stand for their aftermarket exhausts - I think that there are some 4>1 and 4>2>1 designs, some fit and some don't.
