wheel swaps

Sat Dec 05, 2015 4:45 pm

i'm wondering if anyone has done wheel swaps ideas to take weight out of my 91-zx750j
i have later model gsxr forks, calipers, shocks ,wheels -lighter weight and fitted to my 88-1100 90-750gsxr's
my 91 is a bit porky compared to my 88-1100- the first time i pushed it around i felt it was light enough to wheelstand
without the engine running ha!
my91 zx750 discs are on min size and i have 01,02 gsxr wheels and discs in good condition and are lighter,
does the 91zx750 really need a 180 rear tyre and heavy wheel? is there a easy wheel swap?

i got more response on a gsxr site about this question than here, from a guy that was selling his gsxr stuff
because he liked the zxr's better-had done 3 zx9 engine swaps , are the people on here less experement'l

I don't know much about the J model, but as they say, you can get anything to fit with enough modifications. I have a ZXR750 H1 that I'm prepping to race next year and it only has 20mm axles, so any later model wheel conversion is going to require spacing the wheel bearings down or replacing them. I was looking at E model ZX9, '03 to '06 Z1000 or ZX7R wheels as they have a six inch rear and are still a three spoke design.

I have a feeling that the ZX7R wheels might even bolt up to a J model and you just need to sort the spacers. It's worth checking out anyway.

I just swapped out the whole rear suspension and wheel setup on my L for a P model 7R rear.
Wider wheel, no torque arm and still factory green!

Nelso; I have a spare ZXR rear wheel if you're after one? Swinger too.

the simple answer to that question - is that 99/100 times, the answer is no. Wheel swaps almost always mean some type of custom wheel spacers or change of bearing. But if you have access to a mate with a lathe - wheel swaps can be relatively easy.

I don't know if I can get away with fitting the swinger (it depends how close it looks to a H2 swingarm), but I'm definitely keen for the rear wheel.

Oh wow, what a flashback! I remember living on that site when I had my ZXR ten years ago. So much great info.

And to the OP, dude I have a spare set of ZX9 C rims if you're still looking to try a different set.
