Single seat conversion...

Postby Felix » Fri Jul 08, 2005 6:41 pm

Had a talk to an inspection station person today, apparantly all I need to do is pull the rear pegs out, and remove the foam from the rear half of the seat. I am thinking of making a project out of this, and instead of having a cutaway seat, I might make a lockable "boot" type of dealie. I am probably asking for trouble and headaches, but hopefully it all works out as nicely as I am imagining it, and my upholstery skills haven't been completely forgotten. I'll be doing this on the XJ as well otherwise our regos will be "unaffordable"...

Hmm...might have to head north and visit my folks so I can use a proper workshop.

Gotta get it complied as a single seater too- $40 or so at your local inspection station- Boyd Yung have been doing mine. (But the other way around- single to dual seat- Z440 and Spada.)

It cuts your third party insurance to half, which means your rego is just over half price.... :)

saves about $200 a year neka

rego (inc cpt) is $205 a year

I did it to mine, put cowl on, took rear pegs off, took in to to my mechanic, paid him $35, rode to qld transport with certificate and they changed it over. Easy :)

Yup. I have been quoted $50 for the inspection at Harristown Automotive, which seems ok. But I'll check with Boyd Yung as well. So, did you get a part refund Miss Cheeky? If your rego is only $205, then I'd save...lots. I think I paid $480 for rego this year. Multiply that by two...

I just hope they don't give me grief if I keep the seat profile as it is...

Hmm...I think I may need a staple gun...anyone used one of those electric ones? I tried a few staples with the hand operated one, and they only get in about...1/4 of the way...

Damn you mature people .
$700 for my rego this year with greenslip... god'damn (note lack of capital 'G') I hate insurance, esspecially CTP bike insurance in NSW.
And no single seat speciality for us either.

Like I say in any post containing anything about insurance; can anyone explain to me -yet- why ANY 300cc+ bike insures 3 TIMES as much third-party personal damage than ANY 299cc- bike when the rider is under 25?

Screw that for BS; I've ridden with (near?) plenty of tossers well into their 40's that definitely haven't forked out thousands of $s for adv training courses.

And again; I'd like to propose someone (me? :() starting a specialty motorbike-only insurance company... good lucky finding the capital for that venture ay?
ZXR"900" - In pieces... again.
Another engine gone but at least the purple and pink are still there, oh yeah.

i was given a renewal for $640 from qbe for green slip, wheras i got a estimate of about $400 or so (maybe a lot less) for using the nrma. i have the nrma for car comprehensive & the bike 3rd party property & have been using them continually for the last 5-6 years, pays off in the long term.

i think its just that bikes are a vulnerable niche, so they can get away with it a lot more. despite many of the accidents (aside from single vehicle akky's) being non drivers fault.

Oh, and back on topic...

It actually looks like the seat was designed so that it could come in two configurations - as it is, and as a single seat with a "boot" The seat has some holes which look like they would accept screws like all the other body work has, but the only thing missing is the correspoding hard-points. :? This would allow me to simply cut the seat plastic just in front of where the hooks are located so that the rear portion can act independently of the seat.

So it looks like I need to figure out a way to add some hard-points, or just cut the foam out of the rear portion of the seat and re-upholster it as needed. It would be a lot neater if I do the first...but more trouble. And it would likely require a welder, which I don't have (don't know how to weld either, actually). Anyhow, normally I dream answers to these sorts of problems, so I am off to do some problem solving...ZZzzzzz....

Yep, seat can be a max 500mm, which means legally I only have to dock 4 3/4 inches

Well I'll have to hope for a refund, as I paid rego a couple of months ago. I don't intend waiting for the full year!
