motor not cranking

Sat Jan 25, 2014 9:59 pm

Anyone with any ideas ??
When the starter button is pressed the motor doesn't crank over. The junction box (new) clicks but it doesn't energize the starter relay ( which is new) connections seem ok, Battery is fully charged and new, Lock out switch on the clutch lever is ok
The starter is ok because if I bridge the two battery leads on the starter relay the motor spins no problem
Its an old 1997 P2 ZX7R

all fuses ok
side stand and lockout switches ok
motor cranks when bridge is across the battery terminal on the starter relay
I found a low voltage in part of the start relay wiring so I've started to pull the wiring harness apart at all the plugs to check the connections because I have run out of ideas
any other ideas would be appreciated

You could try bridging across the start switch contacts to see if it's munted, or disconnect battery and check across it with ohm meter before and while you press, or check voltage across it while trying crank

I had/have a 96 ZX7 similar thing, turned out it was the the circut board for the fuses (not sure of the technical name) basically a new fuse box fixed it. My symtoms were; you turn on the key, lights on dash and headlight, then hit the start and it would tick and that was it + the headlight would go out but still had lights on the dash. I got away with it for about 3 months before hand by switching the key on and off and hitting the start multiple times, somethimes (if a hill were near by) i'd just roll start it, then it worked.

Will try the above on my '93 ZXR750 if the problems gets worse as it occasionally happens.
