Back with team green on a ZX9R trackie

Hi Guys,

Been only viewing this forum for a long time after selling my zxr750 the moving back down to Melbourne from Sydney. Still miss blasting through the National Park with the Kwakas. But finallly churned through afew other bikes an ended back up with a 99 ZX9R track bike. Bike had been in storage and was looking a bit run down with horible paint work. So i have given the engine new plugs, filters oil etc and got it started sounds sweet no smoke as engine odometer shows 107000 kms I was a little worried. Next is to do new wheel bearings and headstem bearings brake lines etc.

Got me thinking about wetaher to polish or powdercoat the frame and swing arm. Just wanted to make sure that both the frame and swing arm are alluminium if i go down the polishing route. as the swing arm has a pretty basic deign on it and thought it might be steel? After polishing do guys have a clear coat put on? Or just maintain the polished look with a bit of WD40 and a scotch brite pad? What do people reccomend?

Also looking at putting rearsets on it anyone got a pair lying around the garage or know which other models may fit i have read maybe zx6 from 98-02? and zx7 from 96-01?

Other question is in the front fairing i have no ducts from the airbox once it passes through the frame to the fairing, havn't actually rode the bike at speed yet and guy i bought it off said it rode fine before storage. So bike isnt getting any true ram air i guess do you think it's worth trying to get some stock ones to connect from frame to fairing or make up some fibreglass ducts/tubes to get it to the front? What do other guys with fibreglass race fairings on there bikes do?

Welcome.

With the front air ducts, definately try to get some ducts. Also make sure you have the float bowl hoses connected to the ram intake (or vented to sowewhere getting similar air pressure). It will run crap without them..

Yeah the previous owner said it ran good and he has the balance pipe running out to the same area. But witout ducting it would be minimal ram air effect. Was hoping for some after Market without the waterbottles hanging down. Also any melbourne guys out there with gearing suggestions. I was looking at 14:40 or 15:46 with a 520 chain. Just ordered some raceday rearsets off eBay last night along with new screen, zx10r throttle tube grips. Also looking at fork valves and springs I'm 95kg any suggestions or just hit up race tech? I wouldn't go to 14 front. too small a sprocket diameter, me thinks..
The Forks in my old zx9r were originally done by Krooz Tune in Vic... 1kg ohlins springs (from memory - Frank can check :-) ) and valved to TKA specs (whatever that is.. :-) ) they worked fine though. All I ever did was change the fork oil every year - I used 7.5wt .....

Just thought I might add up a couple of pics of how the 9 arrived. Half stripped now with fairings heading off for paint. Ended up getting 15-44 520 sprockets and did chain. Some race day rear sets from the uk. Braided front lines. And the tidy up begins. Getting a pair of stock ram ducts of one of the members here hopefully next week so she'll breathe as the factory intended once again!

As picked up, already stripped into buckets of bits hoefully to be put back together over the next month or two a lot greener and shinier.

A vid giving it a blip after warming it up and clicking it throught the gears to make sure it was ok before puling her down. Sounds good and no smoke so hopefully a service and tidy up be time to hit the track.

I think the link is working now, I miss the induction sound of my ol 94 ZXR750 which had straight through pipe jet kit and kn filter. This has the pipe and filter but don't think jetting has been changed yet, hoping with the ram tubes on it screams proper above 200kph.

Instead of powder coating the frame been looking at a product called black cote by POR15 looks pretty good as easy to touch up if have any mishaps but also ment to be hammer proof?

Has anyone here used POR blackcote?

The Dato is a little track beastie too but doesn't get out much anymore due to no car trailer :cry: . Lucky I have a bike trailer so no excuses for the ZX9 :twisted:

Got some ram ducts thanks to Kwak Addict. So parts are all there got some new go faster bits give old bit a clean and paint where it needs and ready to put back together. Currently waiting for 6 point socket to attempt front sprocket change and some big Allen keys for front axle So I can get to the head stem to change the bearings.
