Float height??

Can somebody tell me what the float height is for a 1996 ZZR 600

If I remember correctly, it's 12mm, but there is a line on the outside of the carbs (next to the KeiHin logo) - that is it. Set it with the bike running and use a line from the bowl drain as shown in your new manual*!

if there is a line on the outside of the float bowl to measure float height that would be really handy....

normally a good rule of thumb with any carbie, is to set the float height so that the float is parallel with the bowl gasket surface when it closes off the needle & seat. Most float heights are normally within a mm or so of this position, no matter what type of carbie you are setting up.

they can be uploaded if you change the format to .pdf. This uses up the least amount of space. I think there are any number of sites out there already that have manuals loaded up so punters can download them for free ??

Yep - connect a clear tube to the drain, loop it up next to the bowl (my bike has a handy little line cast into the bowl) and then you...

The warning in the "NOTE:" paragraph goes away if you do it with the bike running.

Ok so this appears to be a very good way of checking float levels to isolate a tuning issue without removing the carbs. (Very handy on say a GPZ900r!?)
I noticed at the beginning of the above instruction it is pretty clear re the "ignition off" warning.
Can you elaborate what your reasoning for having the engine running is please ?

Yep - wear eye protection and hold small children firmly by the hand! (And not in a Micky J kinda way either!)

My reasoning is simply that the feeding and stopping feed to the carbs is fiddly and it is possible that you affect the float level - if you raise the tube, fuel will flow back into the bowl (but not back towards the tank) increasing the level inside above what the floats would set to. So by doing it with the engie running you can see it in action - settling to the actual 'in-service' level. I usually lower and raise the tube a bit to mess with the float level, and then watch it settle again - then I know it is working at that level.

I'm probably a bit more anal then I need to be with these things...

Also, my old 550 Four 'SuperSport' (LOL!) would occasionally p!ss pertrol if I turned the tap on and DIDN'T start the bike. But it never happened if I did start it, or after shutting off. Cleaned it all out a couple of times - no change. I figured a little vibration helped the needles to 'seat'.
