Using Synthetic Oil v Semi or other

Some Help / Advice please

I'm about to change the oil in my ZZR1100. Only got 7500klm and was last serviced around 3000klm.

I intend to use a Synthetic Oil , but not sure what is in it now.

My question is: Would putting Synthetic oil in over what could be Non Synthetic make a difference? Assuming the filter is changed as well?

Cheers

Nope. It may have had semi synthetic in it and that will mix with full synth.
If it had mineral, as long as you do a complete oil and filter change it should be fine.

+1.

and as long as you stay consistent with the oil you use, there should be no problems.

+1 + 2 I would run semi synthetic ; motul 5100 for eg i use penrite Hpr gas10 (semi synthetic) for my roadie!

my trackie full synthetic penrite sin 10...mainly due to high rpm and heat when the oil is more likely to breakdown.

Both bikes are 2 thou's 05 green of course :D :D

I have actualy called Flywheels this morning and asked them which kind of oil comes as default on a brand new kawa, the mech said - "all new bikes come with mineral oil" - than he also said it is rider's choice of oil after 1000kms, full synthetic or semi! :kuda:

My 10r had motul 3100 gold put in it at its 1000kms service by the dealership, and was getting that till i changed it to the motul 7100 full syn at 8500kms..
Im pretty sure the 3100 is full mineral.. Someone correct me if im wrong?

I know this is an old thread but why not run fully synthetic as its only about $10 per change more expensive (cheap insurance)

You need to run mineral oil in the bikes from new, as this allows the top-end to all 'bed-in' properly ( the rings, pistons, all the cam gear etc..). Running fully synthetic from new is not recommended by any manufacturer as far as I know. For most normal punters, the change at 1000km should be to semi-synth - mainly because the gearbox is nowhere near broken in at this early stage in the bikes life......my dealer recommended semi-synth at the 1000km mark, and only to consider fully synth at the 10,000km mark, and only then if I was considering a lot of track days........but in the end some people just like fully-synth.

Semi-synth oil is 100% fine for nearly all riders, because most of them just ride for fun, and the bikes are generally not thrashed anywhere near as much as they are on the track - where fully-synth oil is worth its weight in gold.

I would like to know which fully-synth oil is only $10 more than the Motul 5100 I run in the MFP12 - most of the fully-sick fully-synth race stuff is like twice as much !

+1

I've been using Motorex Formula 4T(semi - synthetic) for years with no dramas. I think full synthetic is a bit of overkill for the street.

Silkolene from Super Cheap Auto. Great product, have it in both my bikes (and I work for Castro!).
