Folks,

Can anyone tell me if running a 2006/7 rear shock in a 1991 bike in Pre Modern is a no no?

They talk about "visually indistinguishable", do they mean "it's a coilover single shock with a remote reservoir so that's visually indistinguishable from the stock one" or do they mean "I can tell that's off a 2006 GSXR so that's not 'visually indistinguishable'"?

They also talk about "Major Components" which are:
A) All engine and gearbox external castings.
B) Frames
C) Swing arms
D) Brakes
E) Forks and fork yokes
F) Carburettors

Rear shocks aren't on the above list.

PCRA also state "2008 MoMS section 12 “All Disciplines” or later references apply".

I could spend a fortune on getting the arse end of the RGV overhauled or buy a cheap as chips late model GSXR shock which bolts straight in.

Thoughts?

I can't really say definitively either way, but basically as I understand it 'visualy indistiguishable' means exactly that. Externally it has to look like the original item from the period. What happens inside it is up to you, as Gos will testify with his forks for the triple, but a lot of it is down to interpretation by the scrutineer.

The rear shock would most likely come under the major component 'swing arms', but again, I'm not sure how strict they are on the rear shocks in particular.

mate, if your not at the pointy end, you could run a billion dollar ohlins of caseys bike and no one would care.

Have you got the Supp Regs for the next round at EC? on the front page is a phone number for Eligibility, maybe give that a call and ask, if it's not Marcus De Caux and the person doesn't know the answer send me a PM and I'll give you Marcus's number, he's the chief Scrutineer so will be able to steer you in the right direction.

My understanding is that the part in question must look just like sopmething from the period ; that is, at the time you must have been able to go out and buy one that looks just like it.

You are not getting it log booked so the only eligibility issues will be at scrutineering on race day . There wont be an issue using an 06 shock .

Considering you can run Ohlins on P5 bikes I doubt they would stop you running an OEM shock - of whatever year/model. If it was a twin shock rear end and you wanted to put a monoshock in that may be an issue

I've decided to just have the stock unit rebuilt, sounds easier all round if I want to race. Thanks all for the replies .

Yes as long as it was readily available from the period, no worries.
